025 |
The site of a Chapel or religious house on Chapel Brae as pointed out by William Duff. Grieve on the farm, no trace of it at present remains.
Mr J.B. Fernie the propriotor of Kilmux states that his father removed many years ago, the ruined walls and he himself saw the foundations removed about 40 years since. He considers that it was this chapel gave rise or origin to the name of the estate of "Kilmux" The Revd. [Reverend] David Bell of Kennoway is also of this opinion. There has been no remains of a burial ground found at this place. The tradition of the neighbourhood speaks of a chapel lieing here but nothing more is remembered concerning it. It is considered by some to have been a cell belonging to some religious establishment or covenant. |

The site of an Ancient burial place on the farm of Bankhead, the Mound or Tumulus being removed from time to time to supply Durie Foundery with sand for casting purposes until nothing remains to [---] its former existence but a sand Pit_ The following Account written by Dr. Brewster for the new Statistical Account of Scotland respecting A, quite agrees with the local accounts "This interesting relic of Antiquity was opened about 15 years ago in the Corner of a field upon the Estate of Aithernie, when digging out moulding sand for a foundery in the Neighbourhood_ This was an Ancient Cairn or Tumulus Containing about 20 stone coffins and formed the apex of a Conical Hill_ The base of the Tumulus was about 40 yards square and laid with a Coating of Clay and the Coffins were lade slabs placed on edge with a Covering stone and cemented with Clay puddle_Above the Coffins was a Cairn of small stones, about three feet in depth, and over this was placed a composition of Clay and sand, so hard that it required the aid of a pick-axe to penetrate it. In two of the Coffins, near the end, was placed a Small Coin made of Clay, rudely ornamented, about 6 inches in diameter and the same in depth_ These coins contained a blackish substance which was covered with Oake bark, but the bark immediately mouldered when exposed to the Atmosphere_ Five of the other Coffins Contained each a layer Coin of similar materials about 14 inches in diameter and 24 in depth _ These were placed with their mouths inverted on a square stone and were filled with Calcined bones_ all the Coffins except the Five which held the larger bones contained human bones" |

From the nearness of this stone to the tumulus which stood near the east side of Balgrumma there seems good reason to think that a battle was fought here. Leighton in his history of Fife vol.[volume] 3, page 175 says, "There seems little reason to doubt that a battle had been fought here and that the remains of those who fell had been interred in the tumulus". - The New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account} page 268 also speaks of the great quantity of human remains found in this neighbourhood which would lead to the supposition of a battle being fought in this district. |

"There are few springs of good water in the parish

"In the centre of Lundin House which is a modern erection rises a square tower of great antiquity. The property of Lundin which once embraced nearly the whole parish was held by individuals of the name of Lundin so early as the reign of David I. One of King William the Lion's sons Robert married the heiress Sophia after which the property remained in the united families of Perth and Lundin now represented by Lady Willoughby D'Eresby for a number of years Subsequent to the attainder of the Earl of Perth in 1745 when it was disposed of: and it is now in the possession of Captain Erskine Wemyss of Wemyss Castle in the right of his mother daughter of the late Sir William Erskine Bart. [Baronet]." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of the Co. [County] Fife, page 438
"To the north of this" (Dromachie) "is the house of the ancient barons of Lundin chiefs of that name in a pleasant plain with plantings and enclosures." Sibbalds Hist. [History] of Fife p.329

[situation] About 3/8 of a Mile E. by S. [East by South] of Lundin Tower.
Three upright stones situated in a triangular form, they are of red sand stone and said to be from a rock on Largo beach, bearing no trace of any inscription; being rough unhewn blocks. The tradition in the neighbourhood respecting them is both vague and inconclusive, Some alledging they mark the burial place of some renowned Celtic Chieftains who fell in battle, while others imagine they were reared to celebrate an important victory gained by the Scots over the Danes Near the spot. from their position it is all but manifest they belong to a period far antecedent to either and obviously formed a part of one of those Circles of Stones, believed to have been Druidical Temples - In the days of Sibbald a forth stone of equal magnitude stood near the present ones. Mr. James Wilson who formerly held the adjoining lands says he frequently raised stone Coffins near them when ploughing, containing urns filled with Calcined bones and One holding the Complete Skeleton of a man of enormous size, the scull of whom is at present either in Largo House or in the Museum of the United College of St. Andrews. |

Old English [written faintly under 'Three Stones of Lundin' in Modes of Spelling Column]
The general belief and opinions concerning the age of these Stones ascribe to them a very ancient date evidently antecedent to the Norman conquest. Therefore to be written in Old English on Plan. |

"To the South and east of Lundin House are erected three unwrought stones of a triangular form
"measuring Six yards above and as it is thought as much below ground, the solid content of each
"being 270 feet. The bear no traces of any figure or inscription. By some they are conjectured to be
"of Roman origin, by others to be gravestones of Danish chiefs who fought here & were conquered by
"Banquo and Macbeth; and by others perhaps with most probability to be Druidical remains.
"Ancient Sepulchres are found near them. They are of red Sandstone. Two pieces of the Same Species
"of Stone evidently belonging to each other were found some years ago a mile apart on the South
"of Largo estate." New Statistical Acct. [Account] of Fife. page 438
To the South of the house" (Lundin House) on the highway there are erected three high Stones Set
in a triangular form and uncut it is Said that Some ancient Sepulchres have been found near to this.
Mr.Maule thinks that they were erected after a battle with the Danes near to this. Sibbalds Hist. [History] of Fife. p.329. |
