Kinross is the County town but not a Royal burgh. There is a committee chosen yearly to manage the affairs of the town who make a collection annually to defray expenses. There are several hotels and Inns in the town and two Branch banks . The parish church is at the north west extremity of the town besides this there are two U.P Churches and a Free church and school . The Town hall is a plain building near the centre of the town and occupies the site of the old Parish Church the steeple of which is still remaining. The County Buildings are near the north end of the town and consist of a jail and Courthouse where the Sheriffs courts are held. There are two Public Reading Rooms . The occupation of the greater part of the inhabitatnts is the weaving of linen goods [-] and a Worsted Spinning Mill which employs a number of persons.
Kinross . the capital of the above county and parish and a town of considerable antiquity occupies a pleasant situation at the foot of the open vale to which it has given its name, on the northwestern shore of Loch Leven. at the distance of 27 miles from Edinburgh , 17miles from Perth and 19 miles from Cupar.. Formerly the town consisted of tortuous lanes of an antique appearance bordering on the above beautiful lake, but in the present day there is a tolerably well built street , bounding these lanes on their northern quarter and lining the chief road to the

north which this passes through the town. Kinross has in recent times undergone many extensive improvements and the building of handsome new houses in the main street and otherwise and now possesses a large splendid Inn at the north extremity of the town which for appearance and accommodation is perhaps not surpassed in Scotland. This Inn is now occupied as a private residence. The parish church which stands near the centre of the town is a plain edifice, an ordinary steeple. The Town Hall occupies the site of this church but the steeple is still standing. As the capital of the county the courts of the sheriff sit in Kinross and justice of the peace courts are held at stated periods. The [--] is undistinguished by manufacturies and the chief trade of the working classes is the weaving of linen and cotton goods. Kinross is entitled to hold four fairs annually " Chamber's Gazetteer
The town is situated in the centre of the highway between the Northferry and Perth. Tis the head burgh of the shire and was erected in a burgh of barony with a fair every year on the 18th Oct by James Earl of Mortoun and Regent of Scotland. reg Jacob V1.Sibbald's Hist of Fife & Kinross
There is no place known to the inhabitants as the "Vale of Kinross" . It must have been a poetical license taken by the writer in Chamber's Gazetteer
Kinross is not a Burgh of Barony as stated in Sibballd Hist. It has no focal Government but Bailie Baron courts are held there. Mr Baird is constituted Bailie of the Barony by Sir Graham Montgomery and his Magisterial Authority in that capacity extends over the parishes Cleish,Kinross, Portmoak, Orwell and part of Tullibole. |

In the centre of the Old Burying Ground east from Kinross is a square with the date 1675 on it which was the home of the family of Bruce of Arnot but now belongs to Sir Graham Montgomery. Mr Baird informed me that this is the "Aisle " of the Parish Church which once stood here, He says it is impossible to point out the site of any other part of the Church. " The Paroch Church " of Kinross stands a little to the east of the town upon the loch.

Before 1742 the parish church stood within the Old Burying ground immediately beside the Lake . It was then removed from this situation to another at the west of the town which gradually extending its dimensions came at length to place the church in its centre.

[situation] On Castle Island.
These ancient ruins stand on a small island near the west end of Loch Leven, about 1/4 mile from the shore:- They consist of a wall of stone about 8 feet thick, of a quadrangular form with the principal tower at the north west corner & within this court, it is about 50 links square, - the walls of which are about 6 feet thick. In the lower part of this tower is a vaulted room the floor of which is sunk a little below the level of the court. above this has been another vaulted apartment. The other tower is at the south east corner of the court, of a circular form about 30 links diameter it has also a vaulted apartment underneath with stone steps leading down into it from the court; this tower is in a greater state of decay than the other. Within the court or yard are the foundations of other buildings which appear to have been of an inferior kind, also 3 large trees. No date is visible on any part of the ruins - "Aleander III is said to have lived some time at Kinross, undoubtedly in the castle of Lochleven, after returning from an interview with his father-in-law, Henry III of England, at Werk Castle. - In this castle Queen Mary Stuart was imprisoned on the 16th June 1567; resigned the crown with reluctance in favour of her son James VI. on the 24th July, same year; and escaped from her confinement there on the 2nd of May 1568. by means of George Douglas, youngest son [continued] |

[continued from page 7] of Sir Robert Douglas of Lochleven. - The Earl of Northumberland was imprisoned in Lochleven castle from 1569 to about the end of 1572." Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] VI. No. 22.
"Loch Leven Castle stands in an island measuring about 8 English acres, which island is situated nearly in the middle of a Loch or Lake, about 12 miles in circumference and in many places 24 fathoms deep. It is not Known when this Castle was built. It occcurs in history as early as the year 1335, when it was besieged by Sir John de Sterling. &c" Gross's Antiquities Vol [Volume] 2 page 225
"The Castle of Lochleven is situated upon an island of about 2 acres, near the N,W, [North West] extremity of the lake, and directly opposite to the point of the promontory already mentioned. It is needless to tell how this fortress belonged originally to Dongart, King of the Picts, was inhabited by Alexander III. besieged by Edward I. and latterly posessed by a branch of the Douglases now represented by the Earl of Morton. It is sufficient to Know that it was the residence, in 1567, of the most beautiful of Queens and the most hapless of Women." Chamber's Picture of Scotland Vol [Volume] 2 P. [Page] 165
"The Castle of Loch Leven stands in an Island, in the north west part of the Loch, half a mile, or so, distant from the shore. Sir James Balfour, in his notes, tells, that it was the ancient habitation of Congal, Son of Dongart, King of the Picts, who Founded the Same. The Book of Scone shows says that it was valliantly defended by Sir Allan Wypont for King David II. against all the English party then in Scotland Anno 1335. &c. Sibbald's Fife & Kinross P. Loch Leven Castle continued. "The most remarkable piece of Antiquity is the Castle of Lochleven, said to have been the antient seat of Congal, son of Dongart, King of the Picts, who is said to have founded it. It is encompassed with a rampart of stone, nearly of a quadrangular form. The principal tower a Kind of Square building, stands upon the N. [North] wall, very near the N.W. [North West] corner, and there is a lesser round one at the S.E. [South East]. The other apartments were arranged along the N. [North] wall, between the west tower and the N.E. [North East] corner. A Kitchen, supposed to have been built later than the rest of the Castle, stood on the W. [West] wall, near the S.W. [South West] corner; and another building to have been the Chapel, between that and the great tower fronting the South. In the lower part of the square tower is a dungeon with a well in it" &c. Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] Vol. [Volume] 6. Page 170
"The island on which the ruins of the Castle stand is about 2 acres in extent; and here, it is said, a fortress was first built by Congal, the son of Dongart, King of the Picts. In the wars which harassed Scotland, during the minority of David II., the Castle of Loch Leven was held in the patriotic interest by Allen de Vipont, against the troops of Edward III., who acted on behalf of Edward Baliol ", &c. A Lake in Kinross-shire of considerable beauty and abounding in historical interest, extending from 10 to 11 miles in circumference and covering about 5000 Scottish acres of Land. It is of an irregular oval figure, and, possessing several islets, as well as being surrounded with scenery of a pleasing or imposing kind, it is firstly deemed one of the many places in Scotland worthy of a visit from tourists. On its west and north west side it is enviorned by the beautiful vale of Kinross surrounded by hills in the distance, and in the foreground disposed in plantations, arable and pasture fields, pleasant grounds and other materials of rural beauty. "Chambers Gazetteer 1832. The Loch is now considerably reduced in size in consequence of a new cut being made for the River Leven for the purpose of lowering the level of water. "The operations for lowering Loch Leven were completed in Decr [December] 1830, and the water then reduced to such an extent, as to add a thousand acres of land to the Estates on its banks" Co Gazetteer. The Land thus reclaimed from the Lake lies principally on the north east side, where it is low and sandy, but considerable portions have also been obtained at different places round its entire margin. The Castle Island, St Serfs Island &c have also received considerable additions to their area, and the small isles of Roys Folly and Scart Island were under water previous to the lowering of the Lake. The shore is low, and generally composed of sand or shingle, there are very few trees near the edge of the water except on the north & east side where a considerable extent has recently been planted with Fir trees. This Lake is all in the parish of Kinross. D.N. |

Only a small fragment of this Priory now remains. which, along with a recently built portion is used as a fold for Cattle. West of this there is a heap of Ruins and the foundation of old walls supposed to be also part of the Priory around this has apparantly been the Burying ground, as a number of bones were turned up when leveling and cultivating the place. The following account of a priory on St Serfs Inch or Isle is given in Spottieswoods account of Scottish Religious Houses," Formerly a house belonging to the Culdees, in whose place the Canons Regular were introduced by the Bishop of St Andrews" The priory was dedicated to St Serf or Servanus, a monk or pilgrim, who as is reported, came from Canaan to Inchkeith" and got Merkinglass and Culross for his possessions. Brudeus, a Pictish King, founded this place in honour of him," and gave the isle to his Culdees; which King David I bestowed upon St Andrews with the possessions belonging thereto. Our famous historian Andrew Winton, was prior of this place, and his history, which begins with the creation of the world," and ends with the captivity of James I in whose reign he died, is extant in the Advocates Library "of the religous seat" which must thus have been planted here upwards of a thousand years ago, only a fragment suffacient to make a" small pen fold for cattle, is now to be seen. The island being low and verdant, supports a few sheep and cattle." Chamber's Gazetteer. |

[situation] 1 1/2 Miles N.N.E. [North North East] of Kinross.
The remains of this Castle stand about 1/4 of a Mile South East from the village of Milnathort near the present Farm Steading of Burleigh. Close to the Road side there is a circular building in pretty good repair (occupied by the servants on the Farm of Burleigh) A strong wall about 70 links long runs north and joins this with a large Tower about 40 links square, the walls of which are pretty entire but there is no roof on it. West of this there are a few trees & a Garden, enclosed with a paling and in some places a hollow, apparently the "ditch" mentioned [in] the Statl. Acct. [Statistical Account]. It is at present the property of Sir Graham Montgomery of Kinross.
Burleigh Castle situated about a quarter of a mile South east of the Village of Milnathort, seems to be of considerable antiquity. It was at one time a place of great strength, consisting of a square surrounded by a wall of [obscured] feet in height a deep ditch filled with water and a redoubt. The Castle itself is entirely in ruins though part of the square still remains. New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account].
About 20 years ago 2 towers were standing; one was of considerable height, and must have been very capacious. The South or small tower appears to have been the [--st] structure of the whole. The date 1582, with arms and the initials I.B., and below these M.B., doubtless of some [of] the proprietors, were on the North corner of the W. [West] Gable. The great tower must have been built at a much more remote period; but no date or trace can be discovered from which a conjecture as to the time of its erection can be formed." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |
