Of this place Says "in King David II's [The Second's] reign I found it belonged to Dundemore of that ilk. Afterwards it Came to the Lumsdens who had it in 1466." The family of Lumsden possessed it until at least the end of the 16th Century as is proved by a fine monument erected in the churchyard of date 1598. From the Lumsdens Says the Same writer it was purchased by Sir John Preston of PennycuiK President of the Court of Session in King James VI's time though it would appear he inherited it through his lady. This Baronet Seems along with many of the gentlemen in his neighbourhood to have Keenly espoused the Cause of Charles I, and to have been Subjected to pains and penalties in Consequence. For within a month after the death of that ill fated monarch we find in the record of the KirK Session in February 1649 that Lord Balcomie Sir John Preston of Airdrie Lawrence Cunningham of Barns John Lindsay of Wormistone and a number of others whose names are mentioned, had to appear before the Congregation to acknowledge publicly their Sinful engagement and Sign the Covenant. In the Seventeenth Century Airdrie became the property of General Anstruther who greatly enlarged the house by the addition of two wings, of which the one was a large and lofty hall with figures in niches, picture on the walls many chandeliers for lights and a Splendid Chimney-piece of white marble which he brought workmen from Italy to execute. OS1/13/83/41A [Page] 41A Ordnance Survey Office 15 Royal Circus Edinburgh 15th Augt. 1853. [15 Aug 1853] Dear Sir. A doubt occurs Respecting the Correct Mode of Spelling the name of the parish of which you are the incumbent. I Shall feel much obliged if you will inform me, for the purposes of the Ordnance Survey, whether Dunino or Denino is the proper Spelling. In a list of parishes lately received here from the Sheriff Depute of the Co.[County] Fife it is Spelled Denino and I find this is generally the Spelling in all the published accounts relating to the Parish. Revd. J. Burns Minister of Dunino Dunino Manse, Aug 22nd 1853 [22 Aug 1853] Dear Sir, After inspecting the parish registers I find the name of this parish variously spelled at differ- ent times: In 1666 it is called Dinninou, In 1697 it is called Dennino, In 1650 it is called Dynnino, In 1736 it is called Dununnow, at present it is written Dunino or Denino. I have heard the derivation of the name to be, as you indicated in the note at the end of your letter, the hill of young women, but I am not aware of any evidence to prove the correctness of this. There are no remains of a convent on the hill; but Several Stone Coffins were found there Some years ago. I know no means of ascertaining what Mode of Spelling the name is the most accurate. I am, Your Mo: Obed. Servt. [Most Obedient Servant] John Burns. Minister of Dunino
OS1/13/83/41B [Page] 41B Will you please inform me what is the spelling of this name in the parochial Registers & other documents Connected with the parish or Any record you may have access to, that may be Considered of Authority. An early reply on the margin of this letter will Oblige me very much. I am Revd. [Reverend] Sir Your most Obedt. Sert. [Obedient Servant] Henry James Captain R. Engs. [Royal Engineers] Note "Dun nan Oghe" Signifying in Gaelic "The virgins Hill" This was probably Corrupted to Dunino or Denino from a Convent which is Said to have Stood on a hill not far from the church. See Stat. Acct: [Statistical Account]
OS1/13/83/42 [Page] 42 Extract from the Stat: Acct: [Statistical Account] of Fifeshire, page 356 " The parish of Dunino, pronounced by the inhabitants Dununie, is of more consideration for its Antiquity, neighbourhood, and recent rapidity of improvement, than for its extent, or value as a Section of the County. The reporter to Sir John Sinclair on this parish first assurres that its name is Den-ino, which it is not: And then proceeds to account for its derivation from words Signifying"a Village on a large and deep den" But there has not been, time out of mind, anything which can be called a village in the parish: And the "den, so deep and large", is nothing more than the beds which have been formed by two little streams, which after their union are able to turn a Saw-mill. For fifty four years after the Commencement of the Parochial register in 1643, the name of the parish is uniformly spelt Duynyno, Duynynow, or Dunnonow, the first Syllable being always "Dun", till 1697 when it was first Corrupted into "Dennino."
