OS1/13/73/30 30 Plan 39A Inverkeithing Parish [Note - Remains of Rosyth Castle] In German text [Quotation] "Situated upon a small rock, connected by a causeway with the Mainland, stands the Castle of Rosyth, It is a ruinous square tower, forming the northeast angle of what must have been a pretty large building. Over the gateway is a mouldered armorial bearing, surmounted by a Crown, and M.R. 1561. On the stone bars of the great windows of the hall, which are evidently much more recent than the original loop - holes "F*S" and "M.N" "Anno 1639". There appear to be the remains of a four gun battery on the side of the rock next to the sea. This Castle is said by Sir Robert Sibbald to have been the seat of Stewart of Rosyth or Durisdeer, a descendent of James Stewart brother to Walter, the great Steward of Scotland, and father of Robert II. There is tradition that the Mother of Oliver - Cromwell was born in it, and that the Protector visited it when he commanded the Army in Scotland. " New Stat. Acct.
