006 | [situation] About 2 1/2 miles N.W. [North West] from Craigsanquhar. This is the Mansion House of the estate of Rathillet, it is a plain building two storeys high with a large garden. Eastward is the home farm a large and commodious range of buildings. The present house is a modern structure built in 1813 upon the site of the old house of Rathillet, which also was a plain building. Formerly the estate was in the possession of a Family called Hackston, one of the members being known in Scottish Church history as "Hackston of Rathillet". He was executed at Edinburgh July 1681, one of his hands being exposed in Cupar Fife was, along with the heads of Laur. [Laurse] Hay and Andrew Pitulloch, buried in the Church yard there a tombstone with a suitable inscription marking the spot. |
