The occupier when questioned as to what he would do with his Cottage, or rather how he would manage it, replied he would "Mak fend" which means make a shift, then , said the proprietor, let jane Cottage be called Makfend Cottage for the future.

Tradition states that this was a seat, hewn out of a large rock, and that it was customary for some of the James's of Scotland to rest here when passing from Falkland to Dunfermline. It is also stated that some of the fragments were to be seen about 40 or 50 years ago. Through the extension of the Craigencat Quarry the stone in all probability fell in and was lost sight of.
