032 A very fine old Norman Castle in Ruins once the residence of the Macduffs. Situate about 20 chains N.E. of East Wemyss, said to have been built by Macduff 1st. Earl of Fife in the year 1057.
Under the Article Castles, May be ranked the ruins of the Castle of Easter Wemyss, usually called Macduff's Castle,and said to have been built by Macduff, who was created earl of Fife about 1057, and on whom King Malcolm Canmore conferred many very un-common privileges. Two square towers and a considerable part of a wall that has surrounded the Castle still remains. Old stat. Acct.
Macduff's Castle situated a little to the East of east Wemyss. It is said to have been built by Macduff who was created Earl of Fife about the year 1057, and on whom King malc. bestowed some peculiar marks of regard. It is built on an eminence near the sea shore having a very commanding view; and there are few strangers who come to this part of the country, without paying a visit to the Old Castle.
