[South] of the Abbey Pend A vaulted apartment at the S E [South East] of the remains of the Palace, The Revd [Reverend] Chalmers in his Hist [History] of Dunfermline says "at the S.E [South East] angle inside (of [the] Palace) a flight of steps leads down a large sunk & vaulted apartment commonly called the Magazine, in consequence it is [said] of a party of soldiers quartered in the town in the year of rebellion (1745) having been permitted to store their powder [there]. It was long thought to have been the King's Kitchen, & is sometimes so styled, but this is obviously a mistake. It [was] clearly the Kings Cellar or store room & was [anciently] so designated" |
