[situation] About 4 chains South of Wemyss Place, on the East side of the road leading to Kirkcaldy. Knox's Institution is built in the plain Elizabethan style, it is two stories high and in good repair. It was erected by David Knox Esqr. Merchant London, and Miss Catherine Knox of Cupar; the former bequeathed for the purpose £3000, the latter the additional sum necessary to place the institution on its present footing. It affords accommodation to six old ladies in reduced circumstances, each has two apartments in the building, a proportionate share of a large garden attached, and £6 annually. One of the established Ministers of Cupar acts as Chaplain, and one of the Surgeons of Cupar acts as Surgeon to the institution. The funds are vested in Government securities. It is superintended by five Trustees. It was erected in 1839. |
