A substantial stone building erected in the year 1795 for the sale of bread stuffs by a company of shareholders, at present the upper story is used by the Linktown authorities for transacting their local affairs and is known by the designation of the Meal Hall and has been used as such since the year 1816. The lower part of the building is used for the purpose for which it was erected and is called the meal society.

Methven A plain looking old building formerly used by the authorities of Linktown as a jail or lock up the upper story was the place of meeting for the Baron Bailie and other officers connected with the Burgh of Regality the upper part of the building has not been used since the year 1816 and the lock up was condemned as unfit for prisoners about the year 1822. The upper story is now the residence of the Window of the late Baron Bailie and the Lock up is not used for any purpose the whole going to decay.

Land Tax papers 1690 Land Tax Papers 1819 Minutes of a Court of Barony 1761 [situation] Part of the town of Kirkcaldy. A district or locality close to and adjoining the Frith of Forth extending from the Parish of Kirkcaldy to that of Kinghorn. The principle Street is the continuation of the High Street of Kirkcaldy which with the Wynds or Lanes branching off it are narrow the houses in general are of a mean description and occupied principally by weavers. In this locality are two Flax Mills an extensive pottery and the Kirkcaldy Gas Works. Linktown is a Burgh of Regality and was formerly governed by a Baron Bailie at present there is not an officer of that description the local affairs are managed by 9 commissioners for Paving Lighting Police etc under the act of Wm. [William] 4th. The inhabitants in their general conversation call the locality the Links. The locality is bounded on the East by the Frith of Forth on the North by the Balwearie Road on the west by Newtown & Kirkcaldy & on the South by the West Burn or Tiel Burn.

"The principal town or village in the parish is what is called Linktown, which is situated on the west side of the bay of Kirkcaldy, from which it is only separated by the intervening beach. The Linktown has only one street, which is about three quarters of a mile long, and forms a continuation on the west to the principal street of the town of Kirkcaldy. It is a burgh of regality, and governed by a baron bailie, appointed by Mr. Ferguson of Raith who is superior of the whole. The street and the lanes of Linktown are narrow, and the original houses are mostly low and uncomfortable. Two annual fairs of old standing are still held here, one on the third Friday of April and the other on the third Friday of October. Mr. Bremner Senr. [Senior] (Dean of Guild) [situation] At the E. [East] end of Burleigh Street. An enclosure on the shore of the Firth of Forth, part of which is at present used by the inhabitants in the neighbourhood as a bleaching ground, the other or western part is waste ground. Previous to 1812 the green & other portions (now built on) were called the South Links, but from the circumstance of the volunteers of that period being drilled there the place has since been popularly called the Volunteers Green.
