64 Papple Convent (Remains of)
It appears by the Stat. Acct [Statistical Account]
that this religious house was for
nuns the better term for it is convent and
not monastery.
There are also the ruins of another religious
house at Papple: but at what period
it was erected, or when it was demolished
is not Known. About twenty feet of
the height of one of its walls are still standing,
covered with ivy. A Story Concerning
it has been handed down from father to son,
to the present time. There was a religious house
at Friardykes in the parish of Stenton, to which
the refactory priests from Melrose were occasionally
banished; and betwixt the inhabitants of that house
and Papple House, there was a frequent intercourses. A servant
of one of the monks at Friardykes had by accident become aware
of the murder of one of the nuns at Papple, but not knowing that
his master was concerned, communicated to him the discovery
The master therefore takes measures to seure a similar fate
for the servant himself; and the tradition that this was
prevented M. De Lisle, the proprietor of Stoney Path Tower,
discovering the purpose of the master in a letter which the
servant was carrying from him to the master of the
house of Papple."

Sir
I have made minute
equiry of the most intelegent persons
in this Locality About the establishment
formerly existing at Nunraw, And
according to all the Accounts
I Can get of it. It is Said to have
been a Nunnery. Not a Grange-
And at the period of the reformation
18 Nuns were expelled from it.
This is a Common Current tradition
in the Mouths of All persons in the
neighbourhood- And one of my informants
(Robert Neillans An old man 70 years
of Age) And well Acquainted with
the Country And its traditions, Says that
he read the above Account of it in
Knox's history of the reformation, - he
Also Says that the house of "Nunraw"
is the Same building which was used as
a Nunnery. that the walls are about
6 feet. thick, And about 4 years ago
A part of one of the outside walls was
Rebuilt by the present proprietor. but
this did not Cause an enlargement
or other Alteration of the building. When
Supprefs'd [Suppressed] as a Nunnery- it was given to a

A large ruinous Castle on the banks of the Papona Water, about 1/2 a mile east of the Village of Garvald it is a Square Keep or Tower, Such as at the time of its erection, formed the mansions of the lesser Scottish barons it evidently was erected when more regard was paid to strength than to ornamental splendour or accommodation. It is now the property of Mr Balfour of Whittingham. I could not glean any tradition about it more than is Stated in the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |
