[Statistical Account] 1845 010 [Situation] About 3/4 mile west of Whitelaw The site of ancient village which appears to have demolished for upwards of a century although the Site of it is yet well known to the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. The Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Graham parish minister and Mr. Neillings farmer Garvald pointed out the Site. The latter Man is about 70 years of age and recollects having seen the foundations of houses dug up during the process of cultivation. No doubt this village is very ancient as it is noticed in the Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] as being only Known by an old tradition and consequently no buildings then remaining There is indeed no village now in the district to establish the derivation but many circumstances prove that there was one in antiont [ancient] times of considerable extent. In particular there was formerly a Castle of Considerable magnitude and strength; the residence no doubt of the Lord of the Manor and built as was the custom of the times as a place of Security and defence against the hostile incursions of the enemy. A village in former days was almost the necessary consequence of a Strong Castle and a powerful baron. In those ages of [Continued over]
OS1/15/44/9 [page] 9 Parish of Morham Situation -- About 3/4 mile west of Whitelaw "No village now exists in the parish But several circumstances "lead to the belief of the former existence of one probably of considerable "extent and clustered as was usual around the Stronghold of the "Lord of the Manor; in particular the existence of Such a village "will help to account for the higher rate of the Ancient Taxatio * "of the parish than was otherwise to be expected from its extent "and immediately west of the locality usually assigned to the "extinct village lies a [district] of the parish Still Called "Morham Moor". New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Haddn. [Haddington] page 261 *This circumstances shows the high antiquity of this village

OS1/15/44/10 Site of MORHAM VILLAGE Site of Morham Village 010 [Continued] violence and hostility when life and property were not as now secured by law and protected [and protected] by government it was natural for the lower class of mankind to look for protection from their immediate Superior and take up their dwelling under the shelter of his castle where they would not only obtain employment and Subsistence in the various departments of his household but also a safe residence and protection against the sudden incursions of turbulent neighbours or natural foes. Although there is not one storie of the castle now alluded to lift upon another yet there are many people alive who remember the remains of of it and speak of it as a large and extensive. It had evidently been of such magnitude and strength as to be the means of raising a Considerable village for although there are only a few houses remaining near the site of the old foundations * yet the village had extended considerably westward for at the distance of a quarter of a mile a few cottages still remain which still retain the name of the west Gate-end". Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 2 p. [page] 334 *Note This proves that the foundations of the houses of this ancient village were visible at this time.

Of Course the remaining walls are considerably lowered from from what they had been. and from their thicKness and general appearance would appear to have been a place of considerable Strength and demeanor It was a square building having a tower on the north end. Nothing however of the tower north end of the building remains. Lord Charles Hay an official of the English Guards Suceeded to the Estate of Linplum this place on the death of Sir Robert Hay in 1751 See note in "Lamp of Lothian" page 274 and is said to have resided at the place. Linplum Estate is still in the Hay family being the property of - Hay of Nunraw. Altho' [Although] I inserted 1758 on the trace, from what I could learn of Mr. Neillings and another old man on the estate (the gardener) this building would appear to have existed long before that date - It is used as the Residence of the farmers of Linplum prior to the erection of the present farm house -
