[Situation] In the western portion of the Co. [County] of Haddington
A parish in the North west extremity of Haddingtonshire, bounded on the South, the South West by Edinburghshire. on the North west by Prestonpans, on the North by the Firth of Forth. On the east by Gladsmuir and Pencaitland and on the S. [South] East by Ormiston. Its greatest length from North east to South west is about 5 miles and its extreme breadth 3 miles. Its area is about 9 aquare miles or about 5,464 acres, which is all throughout well cultivated and enclosed with diversified fields and plantations. It has a few villages the principal of which is Tranent containing nearly 2000 inhabitants Tranent is in the Presbytery of Haddington, and Synod of Lothian and Tweeddale. Patron the Crown. |
