An old chapel situated near the W. [West] side of Seton House. It is of Gothic Architecture, and still in a state of good preservation. "The old collegiate church of Seton is the finest monument of antiquity in the parish, and is an interesting specimen of Gothic Architecture, built in good taste. The date of the oldest part is uncertain, but it must have been previous to the year 1390, for in the beginning of the reign of Robert III, Catherine Sinclair of Hermanston, the Widow of Lord William Seton 'Biggit ane yle on the South syd of the pareche Kirk of Seytoun of fine Astler, and founded ane priest to serve thair perpetuallie'. Maitland's History of the house of Seton.
Considerable additions were subsequently made to this church by the Seton family, many of whom expended large sums of money in decorating the mausoleum of their races. In 1544 the church was much destroyed by the English during the invasion of the Earl of Hertford. It afterwards suffered severely in succeeding revolutions." (See Stat. Acct. "The splendid church of Seaton was made collegiate, by George, Lord Seton, in 1493. He herein formed an establishment of a provost, six prebendaries, two singing boys, and a clerk; And, he assigned, for their support, the lands, and tithes, of this church, with the chaplainsies, which had been founded in it, by the piety of his ancestors. In Bagimonts roll, the propositura de Seton, in the deanery of Haddington, was rated at £2.13.4. At the reformation, the revenue of this provostay was returned at £40.0.0. In 1544, the English invaders, on their return from wasting Leith, burnt the castle of Seton; And, in their rage, spoiled the collegiate church; carrying away the bells, organs, with the usual ornaments, and other movables, which they embarked on board their attendant fleet." A large field or park which was lately divided into three enclosures by temporary or slightly constructed fences Tradition asserts that in this park Prince Charles rested the night previous to the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. In Fullartons Gazetteer, it is said, "A few piquets were placed around the bivouack and the Highlanders having wrapped themselves up in their plaids lay upon the ground to repose for the night. Charles taking a sheaf of pease for his pillow stretched himself upon the stubble surrounded by his principal officers." |

"The only mansion-house in the parish inhabited by a proprietor is St. Germains, the Seat of David Anderson Esqr., which had formerly been an establishment of the Knights Templar but after their Suppression was bestowed by James IV, on the King's College of Aberdeen." Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] 1835
"Near Setoun there was founded in the 12th Century a hospital which was dedicated to St. Germains who thus gave his name to the place. It is still the seat of a gentleman. On the 20th of August 1296 Bartholomew the master of this hospital swore fealty to Edward I at Berwick and in return he received precepts to the sheriffs of Berwick Edinburgh & Fife, of Kincardine and Aberdeen to restore the revenues of the house which was thus situated in several shires. Among the several St. Germains we may suppose the British as best known, to have been the saint to whom this hospital was dedicated. English Martyr. 97" Chalmers Caledonia, vol II, Page 674. |
