009 | A large village in this parish and Situated on the public road from Edinburgh to Haddington and about nine Miles And a half from the former place. it consists of a Street about half a mile long nearly all along the public road. And a Cross Street branching off it about the Centre And leading for about half a mile to the westward, both streets being indented with Courts or Closes. There is three Churches three Schools & a post office in it, also three cloth shops a number of Public houses & grocers shops. A good number of the houses are well built and from two to three Storys high, but the largest aggregate of them Are of one Story only And irregularly Situated with dingily tiled roofs, giveing the Whole A Meanlooking appearance. these are Chiefly Occupied by Colliers, labourers & Tradesmen. the village is the property of Mr. Cadell of Cockenzie. |
