007 | The Jointure Estate of the Countess Dowager of Roxburgh And Consists of a Commodious Mansion of an oblong form with An interior open court, and three Storeys high pleasantly Situated one mile East of Dunbar and 1/2 mile from the Sea Coast. The policy comprises about 360 Acres of land with a Farm Steading the whole is enclosed with a Stone and Lime Wall 10 feet high. A considerable portion of the demesne is well wooded and elegantly laid out and contains a very fine Garden a beautiful artificial lake and a Summer House in course of erection Brox Burn flows immediately East of the House. There are two entrances on the South and one towards the Shore at each of which is a porter's lodge. The demesne is well Stocked with game and is the Summer Residence of the Countess Dowager. According to tradition O Cromwell Slept at this house on the night of the 23nd September 1650 the eve of the Battle of Dunbar. A small knoll about 100 feet west of the house is called Cromwell's Mount and about the same distance SE of the House is the Grave of Sir William Douglas who was Killed turn over |
