004 | A Stone cross Situated in the Village of Aberlady, of its origin nothing is known beyond the supposition that it was erected as a Market Cross although no markets or fairs have been held in the village within the memory of the present generation, it consists of a standing stone about 7 feet high erected on a base or square pedestal of about 5 feet by 5 feet at the bottom and rising to a height of about four feet high and formed into four steps. On the four sides of the pedestal, there is an inscription on it. There was formerly a stone cross on the top of the standing one but it was accidentally broken away. Since then a round stonehead was put on it by some Stone Masons in the vicinity of the place. but this has also been removed from it. |
