004 [Situation] on the west side of the Ph. [Parish] of Dirleton
A small village near the west side of the parish of Dirleton, on the road that leads from Edinburgh to North Berwick. It is irregularly built but possesses several good modern houses, which are occupied by respectable families. In it are two taverns or Inns, a Post Office and the ruins of the original Parish Church, which was abandoned by an Act of Parliament in 1612, and a new one erected at the village of Dirleton. Gullane gave name formerly to the parish in which it stands. The name is the British Go-lyn signifying a little lake, and seems to have been suggested by the vicinity to the village of a lochlet which is now drained. This village is the property of Mrs Ferguson of Archerfield.
