A noble and celebrated ruin on the coast of Haddingtonshire three miles east of North Berwick, and eight Miles North-west from Dunbar, It stands on a lofty and precipitous and projecting rock whose base is washed on three sides by the Sea. and on the west side, where alone it is accessible. it was defended by two ditches of extraordinary depth and very massively constructed towers The entrance was over a drawbridge immediately inside of which stood a strong stout Gateway, over it on a sculptured Shield, now much defaced, the emblem of the [Continued over page] |

- bloody heart, the well Known ensign of the Douglases, its early proud and powerful proprietor. The castle in its outer structure is still Comparatively entire but wholly unroofed and in a state of desolation. Its interior is a maze of broken staircases, ruined chambers with deep and dismal-looking Subterraneous dungueons, the principal dungeon which has been lately discovered is on the outer side of the Castle at the North-west angle and is Conjectured to have been the Keep of the Castle or the Guard house of the Castle. So strong was the Castle in position, and so sKilfully constructed, that previous to the invention of gunpowder it defied every effort and stratagem for its reduction, hence arose the saying "Ding doon Tantallon" or "Make a Brig to the Bass" which imported that it was as easy to construct the latter as to reduce the former The date of the Castle and the circumstances of its erection are unknown. It came into notice with the rising fortunes of the Douglas family, who obtained the barony of North Berwick on the accession of Robert II and for centuries afterwards it remained the stronghold of their proud and domineering Earls. The Castle was forfeited in 1455 and 1479 it was given by James III to Archibald 5th Earl of Angus, the well-known

"Bell the cat" The next Earl of Angus Who became proprietor was he who married the Queen, mother of James V, and who when he lost all influence over the King and his Councillors, shut himself up in the Castle, and defied for a time the whole hostile force of the Kingdom In 1528 the King proceeded himself, at the head of a strong force to reduce the Castle and took from Dunbar two Cannons called "Thrawn-mouthed Mow and her Marrow" yet he was obliged to raise the Siege, and did not obtain possession until Angus fled to England and came to terms with the governor Simon Panaugo, After the King's death the Earl was allowed to return from his exile, When he Commenced to fortify Tantallan more firmly than before, and here about 1567 he finished or terminated his career, The Castle was besieged and captured by Oliver Cromwell and in 1639 It underwent the same fate, from the doughty and resolute Covenanters. When the Marquis of Douglas made a stand for Prelacy, In the beginning of the 18th Century the Castle and lands were sold by the Marquis afterwards Duke of Douglas to Lord President Dalrymple when the Castle till then habitable was dismantled and left to decay, It afterwards became a retreat for a desperate Set of Smugglers the dungeons affording a safe shelter for themselves and their Contraband goods,

Tantallon Castle Continued
A curious etymology of the name Tantallon is traditionally preserved in the Country. ie. that the two Architects of the Castle Thomas and Allan, obtained permission from the proprietor to inscribe their own names on the front of the building in large Roman letters, which ran thus, Tam et Allan, hence the name the Country people give it Viz Tam-t-allan,
This ruin is beautifully and most accurately described by the author of Marmion.

The ruins of a house, traditionally [said] to have been the residence of St. Baldred the "Lothian Apostle". The greater [part] of the walls are entire, with other [detached] portions. How it got the name St. Baldreds House cannot properly be ascertained, as there is no written authority to prove, that he ever lived here, Immediately [West] of this old ruin, was situated a [burial] ground which agricultural improvements have made to disappear, leaving not the least vestige of it observable, It appears from the traditions of the locality that there was a village Convenient to this ruin when Auldhame was an independent parish, and ever it is Considered by some that the ruin may have been its Church, and not St Baldreds Mansion, |

The Castle in its outer Structure is still Comparatively entire but wholly unroofed and in a State of desolation. its interior is a labyrinth of broken Staircases, ruined Chambers with deep and dismal looking Subterranean dungeons. the Principal dungeon which has been only lately discovered is on the outside of the Castle at its N-West [North-West] angle and is Conjectured to be the Dungeon Keep of the Guardhouse. Tantallon Castle (Continued)
So strong was the Castle in position and so skilful in Construction that previous to the invention of Gunpowder it defied every effort or Scheme for its reduction. Hence the saying. "Ding down Tantallan. mak a Brig to the Bass Rock" which means that it was as easy to make a Bridge to the Bass as to reduce Tantallon. The date of the Castle and the Circumstances of its erection are unKnown. It came into notice with the rising and bold fortunes of the family of Douglass who obtained the Barony of North Berwick on the accession of Robert 2nd. And during Centuries it was the Stronghold of their proud, domineering Earls. It was forfeited in 1455 and in 1479 it was given by James 3rd to Archibald 5th Earl of Angus the well known "Bell the Cat? The next Earl of Angus he who married the Queen mother of James 5th and having lost influence of the person and Councils of that Monarch shut himself up in Tantallon and defied for a time the whole hostile force of the Kingdom In 1528 the King came in person to reduce it and borrowed from the Castle of Dunbar to aid him in his operations two Cannons Called Thrawn-Mouthed Maw and her Marrow for the safe return of which he left some of his Nobles as hostages in Dunbar. Yet he was obliged to raise the siege but afterwards obtained possession of it by a Compromise with the Governor. It was taken after a short siege by Oliver Cromwell. And in 1639 was taken by the Covenanters from the Marquis of Douglass. In the beginning of the 18th Century the Castle and lands were sold by the Marquis afterwards Duke of Douglass to Lord President Dalrymple when the Castle till then habitable was dismantled and left to decay. It afterwards became a retreat for a desperate band of Smugglers as its dungeons afforded a safe shelter for them and their Contraband goods.
A curious Etymology of the name Tantallon is given traditionally. That two superintendants of the building of the Castle Thomas and Allan, obtained permission from its Lord to inscribe their names as Architects prominently on the walls in latin. The inscription stood thus Tam et Allan hence the name the country people give it Tam-t-allan. Tamtallan |

A ruin at Auldhame West of Seacliffe House, as to what it was there is no information can be Collected Concerning it. It however appears that there had been a Village here at the time when Auldhame was a Parish in itself Previous to the Reformation and Perhaps this may be the ruin of the Chapel however it appears to be a place of some note. The greater part of the walls of the building are still entire with other isolated portions of walls Convenient. how it got the name St. Baldred's House I could not ascertain for it is not Known that St. Baldred ever lived there immediately to the west of this was an old Burial ground but all traces of it have long since disappeared. as it got ploughed up from time to time |

This object was discovered by George Sligo Esq. late proprietor of Seacliff about 15 years ago when making a road past the place. It is a large rough Stone or portion of a rock which appears to have fallen from the precipiece at the base of which it now is. when discovered it was examined by Mr. Sligo & Some Antiquaries from Edinburgh. who said it is a "Scandinavian Temple". It is not well known in the Country by the above designation, and the Authorities here given say that it cannot be clearly proven to have ever been a Temple of any description. |
