OS1/15/25/19 [page] 19 Parish of Dirleton In Forms 136 page 81 - Direlton Castle (Ruins of) [Note] -- "The Castle of Dirleton, which as a ruin is still in good preservation, was built by the family of Vaux or De Vallibus about the twelfth century, and from its present appearance must have been a large and strong place. In June 1298, when Edward I. invaded Scotland by the eastern border, no place resisted him except the Castle of Dirleton. During the siege, about the beginning of July, the English soldiers, reduced to great scarcity of provisions subsisted on the pease and beans which they picked up in the fields, presenting a favourable view of the state of agriculture in East Lothian so far back as the thirteenth century. After a resolute defence, the castle surrendered to Anthony Beck, Bishop of Durham. * * * * * When Cromwell invaded Scotland in 1650 the castle was, after a gallant defence, taken by Lambert, and by him dismantled and reduced to its present ruinous state." -- Statist: Acct: [Statistical Account] Page 209

Consequently the Stone was erected to mark the fatal Spot - when locally Spoken of it is Most Commonly Called the "Piper's Stone" - on the property Maps it is called the "Cross" And the Factor Mr Wily Says the legend of the Piper is "Mere conjecture" Supported only by "Local Tradition"

But from what could be learned in the locality the ruin now remaining was but a small part of the building of the Convent therefore "Remains of" not "Ruins of" is the proper term to be written on plan. Also Abbey or Nunnery, is written on plan in preference to Abbey, only which, latter, appears to be the popular term applied to this established in the locality & even by writers. But as Abbey appears not to be a usual designation for a nunnery & particularly one governed by a prioress as this always was It is therefore better to retain the two terms viz. the popular one & that which particularly designates the establishment.

Abbey - About a quarter of a mile west from the town, on a gentle elevation toward the south of the public road, stand the venerable but awfully mutilated ruins of the Abbey of North Berwick. It was a Cistertian nunnery, founded by Duncan Earl of Fife, who died in 1154, of which there are, on the whole, very accurate views in Grose's "Antiquities of Scotland". The site is admirably chosen, commanding extensive and magnificient views - on the one hand of the beautiful and lofty Law, and on the other of the rich and variegated coasts of Fife, the Frith with its numerous rugged rocky islands, and the immeasurably expanding ocean. It was consecrated to the Virgin Mary, and richly endowed with lands in the manor of North Berwick, and with revenues from different sources in Fife, Berwickshire, Roxburgh- -shire, Ayrshire, Edinburghshire and West Lothian * * * * The monastery has been, at one time, evidently very magnificent, strongly built, and covering an extensive area of ground. But it has occasionally been very lightly esteemed, and is sadly dilapidated; though the massive remains are very picturesque, embosomed among trees, and form a very interesting memorial of olden times.
OS1/15/25/39 [page] 39 Parish of North Berwick [Continued from page 38] "At a small distance to the S.W. [South West] of the town there are the ruins of a monastery. The eminence on which they stand commands a delightful prospect of the Frith of Forth the coast of Fife and several little islands which lie about a mile or two from the shore. The monastery was founded by Duncan Earl of Fife who is supposed to have died A.D. 1154. It was governed by a prior and prioress and possessed a very considerable property in Fife and Ayrshire. A small ruin supposed to have been a chapel belonging to the monastery. or to an hospital stands a little to the east of the harbour. The adjacent ground was probably a burial place of the family of Douglass. In 1788 a seal with the inscription "Sigillum Willielmi Domini de Douglas" was found in one of the vaults. This Lord Douglas lived about the year 1353. -- Sinclair's Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 5 page 443. "At North Berwick on the south western side of the town upon a commanding height which looks down upon the Forth and upon the shore of Fife beyond it Duncan the Earl of Fife who died in 1154 founded a convent for Cistertian [nuns.] The founder gave them some lands in his manor of North Berwick with the Patronage of its Church and various [lands] and revenues in Fife. And they acquired the advowson of the Church of Largo of Kilconocher Kilbrachmont [and] St Monance in Fife with some lands that belonged to each of them. The bishop of Dunblane gave them the church Logie-Aithry near Stirling. Adam de Kilconacher the Earl of Carrick who was their zealous confirmed in 1266 to [these] nuns the grants of his fathers. And they obtained various lands titles and revenues in East and west Lothian in Fife in [Ayrshire] and in the shires of Berwick and of Roxburgh. In the ancient taxatiotio the lands which belonged to the nuns of [North] Berwick were rated at £66.13.4. In 1296 the prioress of North-Berwick submitted to the overpowering Edward I. and [in] return. she obtained from his policy writs to the several Sheriffs of Fife, Edinburgh, Haddington, Berwick and Roxburgh to restore the estates of [Continued on page 40]

But in the progress of turbulence and warfare anarchical ages arose when weaKness only invited the attacKs of violence Such was the state of Scotland under James III. The servants & Tithes of the prioress within the parishes of Kilconachie Kilbranchmont and St. Monance were assaulted &. seized by John Dishington and other inhabitants of Fife which seems to have been noted for violence in every age.The prioress applied to parliament in December 1482 for protection against obvious wrongs. And the Lords decreed the wrong doers to restore the property taKen and to repair the damages done. In the subsequent reign Margaret Home the fourth daughter of Sir PatricK Home of Polworth who died in 1504 became a nun and rose to be prioress in this convent of North-Berwick. Her niece Isobel Home the third daughter of Sir Alexander Home of Polworth who died in 1532 from being a nun also succeeded her aunt as prioress we have thus seen that before the reformation began the nunnery of North-Berwick had become in a great measure the inheritance of the Homes. After the reformation the revenues of this nunnery which had remained undelapidated were converted by operation of law into a lordship for Sir Alexander Home of North-Berwick a favourite of James VI. The patronage of the churches of Kilconachie, Largs, Logie, and Maybole, were conferred, by the King's pleasure and the parliamentary power, on several persons who thought themselves entitled to plunder the houses which they had assisted in pulling down." -- Chalmers Caledonia vol. [North] Berwick there is a notice that the Old parish Church was dedicated to St. Andrew. At present there is the remains of an Old Church nearly adjoining the harbour on the north side of the town. Will you make enquiry and ascertain whether this is the ruins of St Andrew's Church or of the old parish Church. Are there any records existing belonging to the town or parish pertaining to this Old Church? Are there any traditions in the locality as to whether this is the ruins of Andrew's Church? This was referred several weeks ago to the Revd. There is also tradition that the family burying place of the Lauders of the Bass who are mentioned in connection with it is marked in the old Grave yard by a large Stone See Stat. Acct. The main entrance, a strongly built archway, is still entire, and the font is still permitted to remain in its primeval position and perfection. The building, said by some to have been a chapel belonging to the Abbey, would seem to have been the Auld KirK of the parish, and evidently was surrounded by the Parochial burying-ground, very long disused. Year after year, in the violent storms which are not infrequent in winter and spring, the sea makes melancholy ravages on this scene of ancient sepulture, and continues to disturb and discover many forms which for centuries have reposed there. * * * It was in a vault at the Auld Kirk, in 1788, a metallic seal was found in a stone coffin with the legend "Sigillum Willielmi de Douglas, - the impression it produces is very distinct. * * * A large flat stone lies in the green centre of the area which the building must have enclosed, And is said to mark the burying place of the Lauders of the Bass. -- Stat: Acct: of Hadd; [Statistical Account of Haddington] Page 328
