Mr James Todd Castle Mains
002 This castle, tho' [though] a Ruin is still in good preservation, and is said to have been built by the family of de Vaux or de Vallibus about the 12th Century and from its present appearance must have been a large & strong place. It was besieged by Edward the 1st of England in 1298 when that Monarch invaded Scotland; and surrendered after a resolute defence to Anthony Beck the Warlike Bishop of Durham"
"When Cromwell invaded Scotland in 1650 this Castle after a gallant defence was taken by General Lambert and by him dismantled and reduced to its present ruinous state2.
The Gardens attached to the Castle are very extensive and tastefully laid out; they abound with Fruit trees, Evergreens etc and have a neat Bowling green in the Centre. They are much frequently by visitors in the Bathing season. Mrs Ferguson of Archerfield House is proprietor and occupier.
