A Circular piece of pavement Situated in the Centre of Quality Street at the Junction of High Street with the Same it is the Site of the former Market Cross and Still retains the given name though the actual Cross is totally removed When it existed, it was formed by Stones fixed thus + to represent a Cross. the pavement above described and Still Call'd [Called] the Market Cross is now the only remains - Concerning the "Cross" and "tron" the following mention is made in the Charter of the Burgh, granted by James VI and dated September 18th 1568. - "We erect make And confirm the Said Town of North Berwick into a free "Royal Burgh, and the free bugesses. inhabitants thereof to use and enjoy the full liberty of burgesses, to buy leathers, Skins, Wool, and other Merchandise whatsoever in use to be bought and sold in our other burghs of our Kingdom, and that they have and cause make a public market cross" and keep a public market thereat on Wednesday weekly, as they have been accustomed in times past. and that they buy and Sell upon the said Wednesday, Wool, Skins and Leather, and all other Merchandise aforesaid, and that they have a "tron" for weighing wool and other Necessary Merchandise" - this Charter only confirms the privileges of a former one. burned. - how long before its date this existed [is] unKnown
