[North] Berwick at Junction of High Street and Quality Street A large solid flag of whinstone Situated at the Junction of High Street, and Quality Street. in the town of North Berwick, It is 5 links Square and is about 5 inches above the surrounding Surface, in its centre is a Square hole of about ten inches in which formerly Stood an upright post of wood which supported a beam, for weighing Leather, wool, Skins, or other Merchandise brought to Market for Sale. It was erected by the "Burgh Magistrates" at some early but now unknown period And the only remains of it is the flag above described - it is mentioned in the present Charter of the Burgh Dated 18th September 1568, but as this charter only confirms the privileges of a former one it is unknown how long it may have existed before |
