002 | [Situation] In the village of Dirleton adjoining Castle Mains A hole about four feet square and of solid masonry work on the east Side wall of a ground floor in one of the apartments of Dirleton Castle, the apartment from which it leads is about 30 ft [feet] long by about 15 feet wide and about 4 feet high in the Side wall. the hole leads down to an other apartment under it of the Same dimmensions. this apartment and the hole or passage leading to it is quite dark And nothing Can be Seen in it without artificial light, from this last Named apartment the passage is Supposed to lead under ground to the "Craigs Plantation" - At Some remote but unknown period a Piper in attempting to make his way through this Supposed passage playing his [pipes] that he might be heard by parties on the out Side - was lost at the place[which is Marked by the Standing Stone - Called the "Cross" hence the reason why it is commonly called the "Piper's Stone" |
