002 About halfway up the Aclivity of the Rock are the remains of an old Chapel. The Niches for the fonts show that it was built previous to the Reformation, proceeding Still further towards the Summit is an old effaced garden, in the centre of which or nearly so is an excellent Freshwater spring some 6 or 7 Feet deep. This Rock is traditionally reported to have been the residence of St. Baldred the apostle of East Lothian in the 6th Century. It was also for many generations the Property of an Ancient family Styled "Lauder of the Bass" one of whom is said to have been a Compatriot of Wallace. The Fortifications on the Bass were demolished in 1701 by order of William III. It being the last place in Great Brittain which yielded to his Dominion. It became the State Prison for the Covenanters in the Reign of Charles II. And was Visited by the King of Belgium in 1819. The Rock is let to a Keeper or Tenant for £30 yearly, on lease, who resides at Canty Bay and has possession of the Key of the Castle It affords pasturage for about 30 Sheep and is inhabited by a multitude of Rabbits. and is also frequented by myriads of Sea fowl particularly the Solan goose or Gannet. 12 of which the Keeper has to give yearly to the Established Minister of North Berwick. who is styled the vicar of the Bass, The Bass is at present occupied by George Adams of Canty Bay and is the Property of Sir Hew Dalrymple
