This [Circumstance from]
This date - and is sufficient to warrant the entry in G. Text
Bothwell occasionally resided here, but that does not make it have an antiquity, the occasional occupation of a building by celebrated character for his own purposes has nothing whatever to do with its antiquity.
Is the house 400 years old - Has it been besieged - fortified - moated - Has it been attacked and defended? or has it been in any way connected with the wars, or reformation - or public transactions of 14th or 15th centuries OMO [Ordnance Mapping Office] |

91 - Jail
[notes]
For what purpose
For trial of prisoners
For Confinement and Punishment, or for both these purposes
Jail is written instead of Prison as the former is the usual designation written on the ordnance Plans.
Whenever the name has been changed the reasons for such change are stated on the forms of the Ordnance Documents - but in no cases should a mere prison be altered to Jail.
What is the building called in Law proceedings? When an offender has been before the magistrate and committee for trial is he in this case sent to Jail - or to Prison?
Gaol - Jail - place where criminals are put before trial - and cases tried -
Prison - place where offenders Debtors &c. are sent after trial - The descriptive remarks should state the particulars - and the alteration of the name should be submitted to the authorities - and also to the Governor of the Jail - OMO [Ordnance Mapping Office] |

110 - St Ann's Chapel (site of)
" A chapel of St Ann, which has escaped the notice of former
antiquaries. On the 19th November 1804 the town council of
Haddington purchased the tenement called St Ann's Chapel
which belonged to Thomas ShanKs, wheelwright in order
that it and the contiguous tenements might be taKen
down and an open area formed as an ornament to the
Street. The town paid £155 Sterling for this ruinous
tenement and an equal sum for one adjoining to Widow
BorthwicK's. This projected improvement however was not
carried into effect and the ruins of St Ann's and BorthwicKs tenement were sold in 1813
to Mr McWatt late builder in Haddington in whose hands the author has seen the title deeds.
Mr McWatt erected those substantial buildings called St Ann's Place on the spot."

This was the site of an ancient monastery of the Franciscans or Grey Friars who were also called Minorite or Cordeliere Friars. The exact time of its foundation is not Known but it appears to be of Considerable antiquity and to have been richly endowed. It appears to have been a costly building from its church which still remains partly in ruins and part of it used as the parish church and appears to have been detached a short distance from the monastery. The site of it is pointed out as that on which Elm House stands in this particular all the written accounts agree and also the parish minister Revd [Reverend] J. Cook D.D. Revd [Reverend] Sir
It is often necessary
for the purposes of the Ornance
Survey to maKe particular re-
search respecting antiquities,
names of objects, &c. For this
purpose I taKe the liberty
to refer to you for information
respecting some objects in the
parish of Haddington, and
will feel thanKful for
any information you can af-
ford me relating to the objects
enquired.
By reference to the pub-
lished accounts of the parish
of Haddington, it appears that
that the parish church was Called
St Mary's Church. but it also
appears that the present parish
church is a part of the church
of a monastery of minorite Friars.
Now the following questions
I taKe leave to submit to

your decision.
Was there a parish church
in ancient times separate from
the Church of the Minorite
Friars?
Was the church of the minor-
-ite Friars (partly now in ruins)
called St Mary's Church?
Was the monastery dedicated
to the Virgin Mary, or what
was the dedicatory name?
I would here beg leave
to refer you to Miller's Hist. [History]
of Haddington pages 377 &
392, Edit. [Edition] Haddington 1844,
where there is seemingly a
Contradiction Concerning the
name of the parish Church.
Whether is the parish
Church or the old church
of the Minorite Friars called
St. Mary's Church?
What name do you re-
Commend to be written to each
of these churches on ordnance
Plan?
In what part of the
town was the remainder of the
monastery of the Minorites
[right hand side of page]
I think there is every reason
to to believe that the present
parish church is part of the
ancient church of the Francis-
can or Minorite Friars.
If I am correct in the former
answer it was so.
There was a church of St Mary
in Haddington to which I en=
trust charter teinds as gran=
ted and which again was
granted to the Priory of St Andrews
and that that was the church
of a [monestry] appears from
articles of agreement between

(exclusive of the church) situated?
Can you point out the site?
There was a Dominican
monastery in Haddington. Can
you point out the identical
or probable place where
this house stood?
Can you point the site
of St John's Chapel in Hadding-
-ton?
Can the site of St Lawrence's
Chapel (which I understand
stood somewhere about the hamlet
of St Lawrence House) be pointed
out?
What is your opinion
Concerning the belief of
the birthplace of John Knox
being in Haddington?
See Miller's History of Haddington

Your answer on the mar-
-gin of this letter will very
much oblige.

I cannot.
Since writing the
above I find a statement in
Millers History that there was
Chapel dedicated to St John which
he states probably belonged to the
Templars a house belonging as
Tradition has it to their order
stands near the custom stone
I think there can be little doubt
after considering the arguments
on both sides that he was born in

Extract from Miller's
Lamp of Lothian
Franciscan Monastery
and
Lucerna Laudoniae, or the Lamp of Lothian
"There was a monastery of Franciscans or
Grey Friars in Haddington, who were also called Minorite
(Fratres minores), or Cordeliere Friars. Their superiors
were called Custoders or Wardens. This orders was established
by their patriarch St Francis in 1206, and they came
into Scotland during the reign of Alexander the 2nd. The
precise time of the foundation of the monastery
is unKnown. According to the Revd Dr [Reverend Doctor] Barclay it
stood on the same spot where a house was built
by John Henderson, Esqr of Leaston about 1785 (now called
Elm House). That the monastery was not only richly
endowed, but of considerable antiquity, is evident
from their Church being so magnificent, when it
was almost destroyed by Edward 3 in 1355,
that we are told by Fordun and John Major, (who
flourished at that period) it was styled "Lucerna
Laudonia", either from its beautiful structure, and

the enlightened character of its inhabitants, or
more probably from its lofty quire being constantly
lighted up, and seen at a distance by the
lonely pilgrim during the night.
This sumptuous church was early used as
a place of sepulchre for the noble & the pious. It
is thus noticed in the appendix to Keith's Catalogue:
"At Haddington there was also a monastery of Friars,
where William, first Lord Seton, was buried, to whom
he founded six laid of coals to be tane to his Coalpit
of Tranent weeKly, and forty shillings of Annual, to be tane
of 'the Barnis'. This place of Sepulchre according to
Sir Richard Maitland, who lived the neighbourhood, in
his M.S. History of the house of Seton, was the "Cordelere
Frieris".
About the time that the celebrated Captn, [Captain Grose] (the
bon vivant of Burns) published his Antiquities of
Scotland, it had become a matter of doubt, whether
or not the present venerable pile now used as a
parish Church, was in reality that of the Franciscans,
or one erroneously supposed to have belonged to the
nunnery founded by Ada. To satisfy these doubts,
this acute antiquarian published a letter which
he recd [received] from a clergyman resident near the place:

[continued from 72e]
Sir - I am favored with yours of the 28 of
last month, and, in answer to it, am to acquaint
you, that I am decidedly of opinion that our
present parish church formerly belonged to the
Franciscans, or Minorites, and is the same that is
styled by John Fordun and John Major "Lucerna Laudoniae".
As a proof that it belonged to the Franciscans, the
ground adjoining the church is still denominated
the Friars Croft. The Convent stood nearly on the
same spot, where an Episcopal Chapel has been lately
built, and some of its ruins were dug out & Removed
a few years ago, so that not a vestige of it now
remains. In what part of the town the Dominican
Church and Monastery stood, I have not been able
to discover, as the town is possessed of no public
Records of any Kind prior to the beginning of the
last Century, and the town was not only almost
entirely destroyed during the memorable siege about
the middle of the 16 century, but since that time
was almost wholly consumed by fire.

[South East] several accidents has occured particularly on the market days, it is in fact a disgrace to the Burgh in every thing but its antiquity. part of this bridge was broken down during the memorable Siege of the 16th century. Towards the west end of the bridge at the head of the arch on the South side is an iron cleek from which it was wont to hang malefactors. |
