[situation] In the Southern Portion of the County. A broad range of moorish heights. stretching eastwards from the vale of Gala Water, in the southeast extremity of Mid Lothian, to the German Ocean at the promontories of Fast Castle, Ernscleugh, and St. Abbs Head, in the parish of Coldingham Berwickshire. They all lie within the Counties of Haddington and BerwicK And are for the most part in themselves, an extensive curvature of wild & cheerless heights, often subsiding into low tabulated tracts of bleak moor. They were at one period clothed with forest, and still in some places have natural woods hanging on some of their steeps, but for the most part they are naked and covered with heath. Most of the heights within this range are known by separate and independent names, such a Lammer Law, having an altitude of about 1.500 feet. Crib Law, 1.615 feet, Clint Hill &c &c. |
