There is no place which can be marked as the exact Site of this Battle but it is supposed to have taken place in a large flat piece of ground near "Auchingaich" which is derived from the Gaelic, Achadh an Chatha signifying the Battlefield. According to tradition, the Macgregors after defeating the Colquhouns pursued them to the foot of "Glen Fruin."
"It ('Glen Fruin') has attained considerable historical notoriety from its having been the scene, in 1602, of a desperate conflict between Sir Humphrey Colquhoun of Luss the Chief of that surname and Alexander Macgregor Chief of the Clan Gregor. Colquhoun was the assailant at the head of a body of 500 foot and 300 horse, while Macgregor stood on the defensive with only about 200 of his clansmen. The contest was keen and ended remarkably in the total defeat of the Colquhouns, no fewer than about 200 of them being put hors de combat."
Fullarton's Gazetteer
"Colquhoun of Luss arrived in this country just as it had been invaded by Alister Macgregor at the head of 400 men, Colquhoun, rousing his vassals, and being assisted by some of the neighbouring lairds and a number of Dumbarton burghers, came up with the marauders at the farm of "Strone" near the head of Glen Fruin. A desperate combat gave victory to the Macgregors"

"One of these murderous conflicts was of sufficient importance to merit a place in the history of the Lennox
and was fought in Glen Fruin in February 1603. The older accounts of this transaction bear such marks
of partiality as to be little worthy of credit, and the traditions of the district lead us into great confusion."
New Stat Acct [Statistical Account]
"At that time, the Macgregors and Colquhouns appear to have been desirous of terminating their feud
by a friendly conference, but with characteristic imprudence they both made secret preparations
to follow up that conference with measures of active hostility, if its results were not satisfactory.
As not the slightest record relating to this conference has been preserved, it is more than doubtful if it ever
took place. - All that can be safely affirmed of the occurrence is that on the 7th of February, 1603, both
parties fully prepared for hostilities, met in the Valley of the Fruin, or Glen of Sorrow - a name singularly
suggestive of the events of the day, as the victory proved not more fatal to the vanquished than the
victors". (Irvings History of Dumbartonshire)
"This glean has attained considerable notoriety from its having been the scene, in 1602, of a desperate con-
flict, in consequence of the renewal of some old quarrels between Sir Humphrey Colquhoun of Luss, the
Chief of that surname, and Alexander Macgregor Chief of the Clan Gregor". (Fullarton's Gazetteer)

"Traces of another Castle called Shandon are discoverable on the hill side above the modern Mansion house of Shandon" *
The remains of the mound on which the castle stood are pretty entire though no trace of masonry can be found.
On its east side is a moat of considerable width and partly of natural formation. On the west side the declivity is very slight and broken apparently from digging a sand pit in its side. It is by some called "Shandon" which is a corruption of Sean Dun, an old fort. |

* Its name "The Old Dun" would lead to the supposition, that it was a still
more ancient stronghold than the Castle of Faslane. But tradition has
handed down no memorial regarding it to the "present time" nor have
any relics been found among the ruins to lead to any information
concerning it.

There are no remains of this house now standing nor can any traces of its site be observed except that the ground is for a small piece flat and covered with stones.
Robert Glen states that when ploughing he has turned up large stones like to what would be used as the foundation of a house. There is no record of the Saint to whom it was dedicated, but a burying ground lay at the South side of the Chapel. There are no traces of it (the B.G. [Burying Ground]) now to be seen except the slight track of a ditch supposed to have enclosed it and which the farmer filled up a few years ago. Nothing is known of its history.
A small piece of unploughed land a little to the North of the Site of the "Chapel" where the house stood in which the priest is supposed to have stayed. A very small portion of the foundation is still to be seen in the South west front of the (Continued in next page [page 40]) |

New. Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]
Only a small portion of this now remains it having been mostly ploughed up. It was never inclosed and all that remains to mark the spot are a few small stones. There is no record of any chapel ever having stood here and the name "Chapel Dermid" is only known to John Macfarlane, Durland, who remembers it to have been so called 60 years ago. Till a few years ago an apple tree grew over the top of it (the burying ground). It is situated on what at one time was the farm of Balnock. |

Remarks on Cancelled names Plans 17 -1-5-6
The examiner in the field having gone to excess in writing the Names of private
cottages &c on the Traces, Major Bayly R.E. [Royal Engineers] has selected the names of the principal
Houses &c which are written on the Plans, and the others he has cancelled, so as to
avoid confusion in detail by writing too many minor names.

A post town in the South East of the Parish of Row, erected into a Burgh of Barony in 1802, having for its superior Sir James Colquhoun of Luss, Bart. [Baronet]. It stands on the North side of the "Firth of Clyde" at the entrance to the "Gare Loch", and is mostly comprized of summer residences built on perpetual feu from Sir James Colquhoun, on whose estate the whole of the town stands. The Burgh proper extends from the boundary seperating "Cardross" & "Row" Parishes to the boundary wall of the estate of "Ardencaple". It is washed on the South by the "Firth of Clyde" & on the North is marked out by stones which proceed in a line with "Milligs Street". It is regularly laid out into streets running parallel with and going off at Right angles to each other. Several of the streets are still unfinished and are proposed to be considerably extended. All the streets bear names and are

lighted with gas. The burgh contains 5 Churches Viz. A Chapel of Ease, a "Free Church", a "U.P. [United Presbyterian] Church" and an "Independent" and "Episcopalian Chapels". There are Schools in connection with the Chapel of Ease, "Free Church", and "Episcopalian Chapel". There are also an "Academy" and "Industrial School" in the burgh. The terminus of the "G.D. &. H [Glasgow, Dumbarton & Helensburgh] Railway" is in the centre of the town. There are branches of the "Clydesdale" & "Union Banks". There is an extensive "Gas Work" for supplying the inhabitants. A "Flour Mill" the property of Sir J. Colquhoun is at the North of the town. The business of the burgh is transacted in a "Hall" for that purpose near the Raily. Statn. [Railway Station]. A well laid out Cemetery has recently been formed at the extreme East, and a piece of ground granted by Sir James Colquhoun to the inhabitants is in process of being converted into an ornamental park for their recreation. The Burgh contains two Hotels, one of them , the "Queen's" of a first class description, the other is also a good Hotel. There is also a good "Inn" in "Sinclair Street". Constant communication is kept up with "Greenock" by means of Steamboats for the accomodation of whose passengers a stone "Pier" of considerable length stretches into the Clyde.
"In terms of the Charter the town is authorized to hold a weekly market on Thursdays, and four annual fairs. |

"The name of this parish is generally supposed to be derived from the Gaelic Rhu (or Rudha) "a point" of land which extends into the Gareloch, near the church. The parish of Row is about twelve miles in length and has an average breadth of fully four miles. It is bounded on the north by a narrow strip of Arrochar and a portion of Luss parish, on the west and south west by the Gareloch, on the south east by Cardross, and on the East by Luss. It was not till the middle of the seventeenth century that Row was formed into an independent parish, by the separation of land from Rosneath, on the one hand, and Cardross on the other. The land detached from the former parish lay principally on the east side of the Gareloch, and that from the latter, the portion adjacent to its present northern boundary, known as the valley of the Fruin. In 1620, parliament was petitioned to transfer the Church of Rosneath to the lands of Ardinconnell opposite, but instead of this the Commissioners for the

plantation of Kirks erected Row into a district parish, though it was not till 1648 that the boundaries between the different districts concerned were finally settled. As a whole the parish of Row has benefited largely from the modern tendency of City Capitalists and others to possess sea coast residences, and it would be difficult to point out in any other place a greater number of elegant marine mansions than are situated within the space bounded on the one side by the lofty towers of Ardencaple, and on the other by the ornate mansion of Shandon". (Irving's History)
"By far the greater part of the parish is hilly and mountainous. The main ridge of hills begins to ascend gradually from the shore of the Clyde in the south, and stretches continuously in a northerly direction throughout the whole length of the parish. With the exception of Glenfruin, which is capable of being cultivated much more extensively than it is, the greater part of the land capable of bearing crops to any advantage is ether constantly or occasionally under cultivation. This, however, bears a very inconsiderable proportion to the whole extent of the parish" (New Stat Act. [Statistical Account]) |
