The Name of this Parish is Supposed to be derived from British Caer A fort, which fort during the Scots-Irish was named Wester Caer or Ker to distinguish it from Another to the East on the farm of Effgill. Another Supposition is that it derived its name from being the most westerly of the five KirKs of EsKdale.
The Parish of WesterKirK is bounded on the North by those of EsKdalemuir and Cavers in Roxburghshire, on the East by Cavers, Ewes and Langholm, on the South by Langholm And on the West by Tundergarth, Hutton And Corrie And EsKdalemuir. There is no detached part of WesterKirK within the boundaries of Another Parish nor is there a detached portion of Any other Parish within its limits as Assigned by the above mentioned Parishes.- All the boundary lines are the watersheds of hilly or mountainous ranges except At two gorges at the South West where the Esk enters And departs. The greatest length of WesterKirK from North to South is 10 miles and its greatest breadth 6½ miles. Its entire Area has now been computed At 27,152 Acres, of which about 1,600 Are Arable, 25,352 pasture And 200 Wood.- The whole Surface except A narrow belt of valley ground along the Esk is upland and a large part towards the North-East mountainous. Some of the hills are covered with heath but in general they Are green And dry And Afford excellent Sheep pasture.- The low grounds Along the EsK consist of a light loam which is Abundantly productive. On the high grounds the Soil is a deep Strong loam with An intermixture of Stones, Moss is frequently found on the tops of the hills.
