035; 043; 044; 051; 052 | [Situation] In S.En. [South Eastern] division of the County of Dumfries. The Name of this Parish is sometimes rendered "Castle of the Garden" but is supposed by some to be composed of British and Celtic Ton Der Garth - that is the inclosure at the Oak hill. The Parish of Tundergarth is bounded on the North by that of Westerkirk, on the East by Langholm and Middlebie, on the South by Middlebie Hoddom and St. Mungo and on the West by St. Mungo, Dryfesdale and the united Parishes of Hutton and Corrie. There is no detached part of Tundergarth within the boundaries of another Parish, nor is there within its limits as above described a detached portion of any other Parish. It is a long narrow band of country descending somewhat diagonally South-west from the South of Westerkirk to the North-east of St. Mungo, - measures 9 miles in length and from 2 1/4 to 1 mile in breadth. The entire Area is now computed at 10,504 Acres which with the exception of about 175 Acres of Wood, may be divided into Pasture and Arable land in the proportions to each other of 79 and 29. The surface is undulating and precipitous - many deep valleys occur, - there are no hills of great altitude, the highest being Grange Fell near the Eastern boundary which - having rather an abrupt acclivity - attains an elevation of about 900 feet above Sea level. The principal Stream is the Water of Milk which traces the Wn. [Western] Parish boundary. Several other Streams and rills rise in the interior which - running usually in a Wn. [Western] direction contribute their quota to those of the Water of Milk. A County road nearly bisects this Parish, towards the West of which there is a branch which runs South-West nearly in a line with the Water of Milk [Continued on page 2] |
