The name of this Parish is said to be derived from bee or bie a dwelling which is supposed to refer to a Roman Camp in fine preservation in the South Western district, midd having been prefixed, to distinguish this Camp from the other Roman Stations about 10 miles distant in opposite directions, at Netherbie in Cumberland and Upperbie in Eskdalemuir.
The Parish of Middlebie is bounded on the North by Tundergarth, on the East by Langholm and Half Morton, on the South by Kirkpatrick Fleming and Annan, and on the West by Hoddam and Tundergarth.
There is no detached part of Middlebie within the boundaries of another Parish, nor is within its limits as described a detached portion of any other Parish. It is an oblong stretching North East by East measures 6 1/4 miles long by 3 miles broad and contains about 17,430 acres:- about 1/4 of the whole Area is arable, about 360 acres in wood and the remainder pastoral and waste.
The surface along the South West is low and undulating, towards the centre hilly, and in the North mountainous and wild. A clayey soil prevails gravel and loam being occasionally met with. The greatest altitudes are from 800 to 900 feet. The entire district is well watered by numerous Streams, the principal of which are Kirtle Water on the East boundary Mein Water and Westgill Burn on the Western boundary and River Sark which rises in the most easterly district, the majority of the other Streams being merely rills termed in the district Sikes. The Caledonian Railway from Edinburgh traverses the Southern district in a Southerly direction towards Carlisle. There are two Turnpike Roads, which intersect each other near the Southern extremity of the Parish. Limestone is worked to a considerable extent. No minerals are wrought, Coal has been supposed to exist, to discover which many expensive but unsuccessful attempts have been made. There are |

Parish of Middlebie Co Dumfries
there are ----- seven villages Middlebie, Eaglesfield, Wallacehall, Waterbeck, Lauriesclose, Dalbate and Kirtlebridge. They are all hamlets with the exception of Eaglesfield near the South East extremity of the Parish which consists of a double line of one storey houses stretching from west to east a distance of nearly one mile. The houses are dilapidated and the tout? enarmble of this village uninviting, the population thereof numbering nearly 700 being almost entirely composed of poverty stricken weavers------ Middlebie has one Parish Church Parish Schools and an United Presbyterian Church. The houses and farm-steadings are in indifferent condition and have but limited accommodation. The Population of the Parish about 2,200 employed chiefly by Carlisle and Glasgow Manufacturers.
The principal Antiquity is a Roman Camp near the Southern extremity of the Parish "considered says the New Statistical Account "as almost the most perfect remains of Romas Antiquity or grandeur existing in Britain, the fossae, aggers and prcetorium being quite distinct" Though the entire dimensions of this Camp may still be traced , it is only on the North side where any remains now exist, the fossae and aggers being well defined there. The prcetorium as mentioned in the foregoing quotation cannot now be tracedhowever. - This Camp is of similar dimensions and construction to those which are supposed to have been constructed for a single Roman Legion without Allies. General Roy supposes it to be the Bloturn Bulgium of the Romans Entrenchment- forming a square are traceable in close proximity to the North West Parish Boundary pronounced by people in the locality as having formed those of a Roman Camp. The dimensions are so trifling and the apparent defences so slight as almost to preclude the supposition of its Roman origin. The only construction however is, that this work may - from its peculiar formation - have formed a temporary Post capable of accommodating 16 - 20 Roman soldiers. No mention of this work is made by any Authority. Four encampments of round formation are shown in the 2nd division of Parish, which the people in the locality characterise as British Forts, but respecting which the New Statistical Account remarks * The Remains of a Border Tower or Peel are still discernible near the Southern extremity of the Parish. This structure probably derived all its notability from the circumstances of a family called Bell being the original possessors, a member of which figures so conspicuously in the Tale of Fair Helen of Kirkconnel Lee. Middlebie consists of those of Pennersaughs, Carruthers and Middlebie all having been united in 1609. In the Ancient Parish of Carruthers there was a village of the same name which derived considerable notoriety from the circumstance of its having been a favourite resort of Freebooters during the Border Feuds. ---- the site of which has been shewn- Also the Site of the Parish Church of Pennersaughs as pointed by people in the district.
* There are in many places small extended Camps or Birrens of a round form, very prominent and in good presentation. It is conjectured that they were constructed by the Septs or Lairds for the protection of Cattle during Border Feuds, but on account of urns having been found in them it is probable that they are of an earlier date and may be what are called "British Fortifications" March 1857 |

Annan 10th October 1865
Sir,
Mr E B Smith of Blackwood House in the Parish of Middlebie has desired me to draw your attention to two errors in the published sheet for that Parish no LV111.2. as follows
vizt. in the enclosure or plantation marked, no 1554., a fence running through the same and forming the boundary fence between Springkell and Blackwood House at that point is entirely omitted; and a portion of the Village of "Eaglesfield" at the East end thereof (Nos 1817. 1618 and 1619) is marked "Sunnybrae" instead of Eaglesfield. ----- The former may be the name of a Cottage but it certainly does not apply to the 8 or 10 houses in that locality, the same forming merely the Eastern portion of the Village as is borne by all the Tack rights of |

Sergeant Meade Sunny Brae Dumfries Mid--- Dumfries
Annan 6th December 1865
Sir,
Referring to my letter of the 16th October last and your answer of the 21st of same month I beg to state, that the fence referred to , through plantation numbered 1554 on Sheet LVIII.2 Middlebie Parish, consists of turf or "Sod" with thorns on the top, and runs in the direction indicated by the red ink line on enclosed Sketch. The fence is not in good order, but being through a plantation, a complete fence is not required.
It forms however the boundary or march between Springkell and Blackwood House, at that point.
"Sunnybrae" is not the name of any locality, and has been merely assigned by the feuer of plot No 1617 or 1618 to their smallholding. The entire buildings extending from the plot numbers 1443 on Sheet No LVIII.I to 1619 on Sheet NO LVIII.2 form the Village of "Eaglesfield" which derives its name from the Father of the present proprietor of Blackethouse, who about fifty years ago began to let out small parts of his property there for building and gave the place his own Christian name. Mr Smith the present proprietor, bears the same name.
I may add that I have seen many of the Long houses or Tacks by which the owners of houses hold, and they invariably

October 21st 1865
Sir,
In reply to your letter of the 16th inst. in which you refer to two errors in Sheet LVIII.2 Middlebie Parish. I beg to say that, according to the manuscript survey in this office, there is nothing that can be regarded as a permanent or substantial fence passing through the plantation numbered 1554. Will you be so good as to state what is the nature or character of the fence to which you allude; and to send me a sketch showing its position.
The name "Sunnybrae" refers to " a piece of rising ground on the west side of Palmersgill Bridge" Rev[Reverend] William barton, Schoolmaster, is one of the authorities for this name.
It should have been written somewhat nearer to Palmersgill Bridge; and I will have this done if Mr Smith thinks it necessary.
I am Sir,
Your obedient servant Colonel Royal Engineers

Sir,
In accordance with your wish I will have the name "Sunny Brae" and "Smiths Park" erased from Sheet LVIII.2 Middlebie Parish, Dumfriesshire. I regret that I cannot ?--- the fence through the plantation numbered 1554 It would be necessary to have its position --- by one of our own Surveyors. At present I have no one in the neighbourhood that I could send to do it.
There is not likely to be soon a re-issue of the above sheet.

invariably describe the pieces of ground let as lying in the "Village of Eaglesfield"
The name "Sunnybrae" should therefore should be left out altogether and also "Smiths Park" on No 1554 of the Sheet, the latter name being almost entirely unknown in the District. Mr Barbour the Schoolmaster has not been long in Eaglesfield and was not a very good authority. But if you would have the goodness to cause any Local Surveyor to visit the place now and call upon Mr Smith, he will have much pleasure in assisting to get the matters referred to rectified.
