031 [Situation] About 7 chains South of Nether Keir. A large Oak Tree about 200 yards South of Nether Keir supposed to have got its name in the time of Bruce. It is in he property of William Hunter ArundellIt is said that Bruce Signed some Charter under this tree. Sometimes called the Royal, the Stag and the deaf , the latter because if a person near called, he couldnot be heard at the other side of the tree. I consists of 800 ft [feet] of useful wood and is about 65 ft [feet] high in its stem.

The name is applied because the place is rough & broken. The first word when applicable to wood is spelt Hag, this word no doubt deriving its name from part of the wood being cut down or felled at a former period.
