Birscaback [note] Mr. Stewart Factor for J.J. Hope Johnstone of Raehills M.P. [Member of Parliament] remarks upon
the spelling of this name that "Birsca was originally the general name
of the two farms now called Paddockhole and Birscaback. About 1700
it was divided into two. The northern part was called Birscaback - the
Southern portion was in Titles called Birscashank - but the houses being
built at Paddockhole, the farm acquired that name," hence the
apparent disparity as P [per] authorities quoted.
