030 [Situation] ¾ mile S.W. [South West] by W [West] from Minnyhive,
The N.-W [North-West] corner of a small field adjoining Nether Kirkcudbright on the West where two lines running parallel from W. [West] to E, [East] rise about 2 feet above the surrounding ground and another from N. [North] to S, [South] may be discerned, believed by Mr. Young present occupant of Nether Kirkcudbright to be the track of foundations of an Ancient Chapel dedicated to St. Cuthbert from which the Name Kirkcudbright is said to be derived. Mr. Young entered this Farm upwards of 20 years ago, at which period the small field where the Site is shewn was an Orchard which he ploughed and though a perfect stranger to the locality he states that he was Convinced at the time - [&] from the vast quantities of bones turned up by him that the ground had been at an early age appropriated to burial purposes - which surmise was subsequently confirmed from enquiries at old residents who stated the orchard to be the reputed burial- ground attached to St. Cuthbert's Chapel._ Examined the adjoining Steading neighbouring Walls [--] but could discover no vestiges that could pertain to a religious structure. Site of St. Cuthbert's Chapel - List of Names as written - below St Cuthbert's Chapel is some faint text:
[Please to insert the above - the information respecting which Could not be obtained before the Plans were despatched to O. M O]
- Situation - distance is assumed to be 3/4 mile (rather than 3/11) since Nether Kirkcudbright is ¾ mile S.W. by S. from Minnyhive
- Descriptive Remarks - towards the end of line 7 before 'from' - not sure if it an '&' or a letter scored out. Also the last line - squiggle after 'Walls' ?
