[Situation] At the N.E. [North East] point of the County of Dumfries.
The name of this Parish - derived from Gaelic Uisge - was anciently written Ewesdale which is now contracted into Ewes the name of the Stream which from North to South bisects the entire district.
The Parish of Ewes is bounded on the North by that of Cavers in Roxburghshire, on the East by Castleton in Roxburghshire and Canonbie in this County, on the South by Canonbie and Langholm and on the West by Westerkirk. There is no detached part of another Parish within its boundaries as above detailed, nor is there a detached part of it within the limits of any other Parish. It extends 8 miles in length and about 5 1/2 miles in average breadth, and contains about 25,000. Impl. [Imperial] Acres. The general appearance of the district is hilly - at the North and North-eastern districts the hills attain an altitude of from ten to fifteen hundred feet. The arable land is confined principally to the Banks of Ewes Water, the soil of which consists of light loam and gravel - on the higher grounds the soil has a tendency to a deep loam. The principal Streams are Ewes Water which having its source near Mosspaul at the northern extremity of the Parish and running South, bisects the district, Tarras Water from Hartsgarth Fell on the En. [Eastern] boundary and flowing S.S.W. [South South West] till it forms a part of the Southern Boundary and Muckledale or Meikledale Burn from Pikeshaw Hill on the Northern Boundary flowing S.S.E. [South South East] to Ewes Water. Numerous other considerable Streams and rills rising in the interior and also others from the hills at the West and Eastern districts, all contribute their waters either to Ewes Water or Tarras Water.
