[Situation] At the S.W. [South West] extremity of the Co. [County] of Dumfries.
The Name of this Parish is Gaelic, compounded of "Dun - a fortified house" and "Scor or Sgor a sharp rock, - more freely by Some interpreted, "The " Strength or Fortlet on the projecting rock." - Tradition has not however assigned a locality to answer this description, neither can any trace be found to point out the Site of the original designation of this Parish.
There is no detached portion of Dunscore within the boundaries of any other Parish, neither is there within its limits a part of another Parish. The Parish of Dunscore, situate on the Western border of Nithsdale, - is bounded on the North by the Parishes of Glencairn and Keir, on the East by the River Nith dividing it from Kirkmahoe and Holywood, on the South by Holywood and on the West by the loch and water of Urr and the Parish of Kirkpatrick-Durham in Kirkcudbrightshire Stretching from West to East, -compressed almost to bisection at the middle, - this Parish is in extreme length 11¾ miles, in breadth very irregular, varying from a ¼ of a mile or less to 3¾ miles, Consequently the Superficial Area can only be about 23½ to 23¾ miles, or roughly computed may be about 15,150 Imperial Acres, of which little more than 5,500. Acres are Capable of profitable Cultivation. - There are about 550 Acres of natural wood and plantation. The land notwithstanding its disadvantages is much divided, there being about 50 proprietors. - The Average rent of land is about £1.4.0. - The Average Amount of raw produce Annually raised in the Parish may be valued at £16,500, - like most of the other Parishes in this County husbandry has made great Advances of late years, And substantial Farm-houses and steadings have everywhere replaced the old-thatched and inconvenient buildings. - The land is in general well enclosed and subdivided. - the prevailing fence being the dry stone dike. is mountainous and rocky, sloping down to a central glen called Glenessland; that of the eastern portion consists chiefly of three diverging Vales having intermediate hills, but towards the boundary in this direction, the surface is somewhat open, - beautified by the meanderings of the Nith amidst the luxuriance of its holms. - The Western Glen about 4 miles in length - becomes rocky and barren toward the boundary, the hills which enclose it are heathy and fit only for pasture, the most Considerable of which is Bogrie Hill said to reach 120[0] feet above Sea level - The principal Streams are the Nith, Cairn Water And Glenessland Burn, the first runs along the Eastern boundary for two miles the second intersects the Parish at its narrowest part, And the last traversing the Western Glen from which it derives its name falls into the Cairn Someti[mes] called Cluden or Clouden Water from its Confluence therewith, until its junction with River Nith - There is also a considerable Sheet of Water called Loch Urr, in which the Parish Boundaries of Dunscore, Glencairn and Balmaclellan meet. -This Parish is destitute of all mineral resource, - peat is the [ fuel] most generally used which is procured within the Parish - Since the opening of the G. & S.W. [Glasgow & South Western] Railway Coal is readily obtained at the Audgirth Station at the N.E. [North East] end of Parish. - No Manufacture is carried on, if weaving to a limited extent conducted by private individuals be excepted; And the only attempt ever m[ade] was with a Distillery at Glenessland, which must have been unremunerative as at the expiry of two years - the proprietor then dying, the Concern was given up. What now remains of the building is occupied chiefly as Cot houses. The Turnpike from Dumfries to Glasgow passes through the Eastern portion of parish and sends off a side-branch from nearly opposite the Lodge of Friars Carse which passing through Dunscore Village enters Kirkcudbrightshire. The Turnpike leading to Ayr traces for some distance at the N.E. [North East] side of Parish. The only Village is Cottack now universally termed Dunscore, having a population of about 300. And in which are two public-houses aspiring to the appellation of Hotels or Inns - It is 9 miles N.W. [North West] of Dumfries, is situate on elevated ground and commands a picturesque and somewhat romantic view of the Glen traversed by the Cairn. - Population of the Parish about 1650. - Dunscore is in the Presbytery And Synod of Dumfries. The Parish Church is conveniently situate in the village, being at nearly equal distances from the two extremes of the Parish - it is in the Gothic style of architecture and is surm[ounted] by a handsome Square tower - it Accommodates 850. - was erected in 1823. - Patron The Crown - Stipend £215.18.8. Minister John Hope - There are three parochial [ ] supported chiefly form interests of Mortifications. - There are also two other Churches, respectively belonging to the United Presbyterian and Free Church Congregations
Camps frequently occur throughout this Parish, but with the exception of the one upon Springfield Hill - they are not noticed by any authority - their origin seems doubtful;- they are by the people of the locality considered as Roman, but their size and formation do not favor this supposition - Resembling those generally denominated Danish Camps, there is a greater possibility that they belong to that class of Antiquities, more especially |

when considered that this district was for sometime in possession of the Danes.- Some of them are so small and so situated as at once to favor the idea that they are merely hill forts constructed during feudal times for Commanding the passes.- The Camp on Springfield Hill of almost elliptical formation as noticed by the Revd. Mr. Bryden in his Statistics of Parish "is probably Roman, as from its advantageous situation, it is well "calculated to maintain A Communication by Signal through the Bar Hill in Tinwald with the great Roman Camp at Burnswark." Such a Conclusion cannot however be satisfactorily arrived at, if Considered that the Roman Road traversed the opposite side of the Nith, - placing a barrier in the shape of a deep and rapid river in the line of Communication with this Camp - that neither a Roman Road nor yet Antiquity have ever been found in this Parish and more especially that the formation is not that usually attributed to Roman Camps - A Druidical Circle occurs which is well defined by 29 stones. It has been ascertained that Some of these Stones bearing the mark of the chisel have been placed merely as preservatives of the original formation of this temple. - It is situated within what is supposed to have been a Camp.- The principal Church of dunscore during Popish times was situated at the East end of the Parish, but in 1649. it was superseded by the erection of another at Cottack It was attached to Holywood Abbey as in 1257 there arose a controversy between the Monks of that establishment and those of Melrose Abbey which was settled by William Bishop of Glasgow at Kirkmahoe, deciding, that the Church of Dunscore belonged to the Monks of Holywood but that the tithes could be claimed by those of Melrose. - The site of the Church us still pointed out, parts of the walls having been visible at the Commencement of this Century - the Graveyard around it is still in use noticeable for the place of interment of the indefatigable, now execrated Grierson of Lag. The site of another Church or rather As is supposed Chapel of Ease to the former is pointed out at a place still retaining the name of Chapel, and to which was originally attached a graveyard - The Site of a Monastery at Friars Carse is pointed out by the proprietrix Mrs. Crichton. An edifice of this description is reputed to have existed hereabout. There are however no document extant to define the precise Site thereof.- It however appears from Some Ancient documents to have been as a Monastery dependent on Melrose Abbey. Some Sculptured Stones in the vicinity are reputed from the peculiar workmanship thereon to have belonged to the Monastery - Two fortified Towers at Bogrie And Sundaywell are noticeable as places of refuge for the Covenanters during the times of persecution. These are however now Amalgamated with the modern buildings. On Halliday Hill is Lag Tower (a Ruin) supposed to have been built by the Griersons or McGregors in the reign of |

There are however no historical facts whereby to judge of its occupancy or date. - See Page 79.- |

[Situation] On N.W. [North West] Parish Boundary immediately N.E. [North East] of Skelston Moor.
A Small glen extending from the march between the lands of East & West Skelston As a little plantation near the foot of the plan, and through the bottom of which runs the boundary between the Parishes of Dunscore & Glencairn.-
There was formerly a farm in this district called Clack from which the Cleuch & Stream have been named. The correct orthography of the word does not seem to be known, but all the people in the district pronounce it as if written Claak or Claick, even the Messrs Henning pronounce it in this way not withstanding the peculiarity of their spelling. Cleugh more applicable to a glen
Probably the name has been derived from Clack, geese, or Clack, wool cut off the sheeps mark to make it lighter. |

Perhaps the correct orthography is
"Claaick", the farm referred to having
derived its Name from the Circumstance of
its Celebration of Harvest-home termed the
Claaick or Clawick.- This word is still in
Common use in Aberdeenshire; when harvest
is late this feast is termed Maiden Claaick
when late Carlin Claaick. -

[Situation] About 3 miles N.W. by W. [North West by West] of Dunscore Village
The remains of a small camp, which had probably been used as an outpost of a much larger one situated lower down, as, from its position, it is much better adapted to overlook the Surrounding hills. * This, no doubt, has been a Camp or Fort of Some Sort, it is too rude in its Construction to be of Roman Workmanship, and too insignificant to be used by them as a place of Strength, probably, may be Pictish or Danish.
+There have been no Roman Antiquities ever found in this neighbourhood, being the Roman Road traversed the opposite side of the Nith.- It is therefore most improbable that this is a Roman Camp - intercepted as the Romans would thus be in their Communication with the Road by a deep and rapid river. |

The remains of a Camp, which from its form, is believed to have been used by the Romans. It is situated in the bottom of the valley, but there are the remains of an outpost higher up probably intended to overlook the surrounding hills See prceeding Page "Camp".
*This has been a Strongly Constructed Camp, but seems improbable, from its low situation, to have been of Roman Origin, 'Trenches of Pass' were numerous in the Feudal times, and most likely this was one of them, its situation merely commanding the Pass of Glenessland. OB |

[Remark]
* The derivation of the name of this farm is apparently a misnomer, - as taken from the
neighbouring Lakes. - The name no doubt originated in feudal times from the Proprietor
or tenant of this farm paying "Mail" or a Sum of money to freebooters or others for the
security of his property thereon - and probably the original and Correct name is
simply Mailing. - And which is the Scotch term now or recently in use, for the par-
ticular period during which a farm is held by a Tenant, JB Junor.
or simply - a farm -

It appears from Ancient documents however to have been dependent as a Monastery on Melrose Abbey. In 1465. Cardinal Antonius confirmed a Charter by the Monastery of Melrose of the adjoining property of Ellisland to John Kirkpatrick, but whether Friars Carse was included in the Con-veyance does not Appear. The ruins or remains of a Castle on the Island in Loch Urr, there is a tradition 'that the Island was occupied by Rebels and other outlaws, who fortified it', I think the Island & fortification at White Isle would have been used for some purpose of the kind "In this Loch there is an old ruinous Castle, with planting of Sauch or Willowtrees for the most part about it, where many Wildgeese and other Waterfowl breed, to this place there is an entire from Dunscore Side, by a causey, which is covered with water kneedeep". The following is from the Gazr. [Gazetteer] of Scotland. "The Islet in Loch Urr was Certainly the Site at a later date of an important though unstoried Castle. Some ruins which remain shew the fortalice to have been of great Strength and to have had a variety of apartments."- Selgovae huts are also supposed to have existed on this Islet, for Loch Urr seems to be the Lock-Cure of Camden which was the Site of a Selgovae Toun. |

Statistical Account |

[Situation] About 1¼ Mile S.E. E. [South East by East] of Dunscore Village.
A very considerable eminence in the lower part of the Parish. - There are obvious traces on Springfield Hill of a Military Station, which seems hitherto to have escaped notice. It is of an oblong form, evidently adapted to the nature of the ground, and covers about to acres of ground. It is now covered by a plantation of larch, enclosed with a dry stone fence, but may be easily traced out. There is a double mound in front forming five crescents with a ditch between them. the outer crescent is smaller than the inner, which not only expands into a wider area, but is considerably more elevated. the centre of the whole forming the top of the hill, is flat, but the same regularity cannot be traced in the rear as in front, although there is a steep descent all round. There is only one entrance apparent, which is on the east side, and just at the point of junction with the inner & outer mounds. This has evidently been a military station & probably a Roman one, - for it is situated very near the line of an old Roman road which passed through the Parish of Kirkmahoe on the opposite side of the Nith, and it commands a complete view of the country in the direction of Tinwald, |

"He used to put the Saints into a Barrel having long spikes driven inward and roll them down Lag Hill exulting in their torture, another Cruelty of his was, Cutting the breasts out of Women Suckling Children", However the Vengeance of God at length overtook him, and Carried him away by Sudden death - when he was a very old man, it did not stop here, but even the horses that carried his Remains to the grave, died Suddenly after their burthen being depositted in the grave. |

All the authorities here seem to be at fault and probably have made a corruption of two Scotch words Birssy and Wala or Wale', which signifies a rough vale or pasture. - The features of the ground even at the present time greatly favor the supposition that Birssywala is the original & correct spelling - many rough pastures or patches still existing in the vicinity of this farm even in the face of agricultural improvements [Initialled] |
