055 | [Situation] On St. Michaels Street opposite to St. Michaels Church The site of the principal gateway or port which led to and from the town on the South side through the fortification wall and was the high road that led to the South & to England. This gate stood across the road which is now St Michael Street near the S. [South] West corner of the Church yard. It was demolished about the beginning of the Eighteenth century about the time when the Hospital or poor house was erected. |
