"erected in Dumfries a strong building which was called the New Wark and which was several storeys high And had
"vaults under it Tradition States that in the New Wark the most valuable effects of
"the Town was deposited for safety upon an alarm of an inroad from the hostile borders or when the inveterate bickerings between
" the Maxwell's and Johnstones endangered the Safety of the Town. The New Wark has been long since demolished. but
"the vaults under it were laid open when a foundation was dug for the Monument which was erected to Charles Duke of
