A small but romantic river which rises on the south side of Hartsgarth a height on the boundary of Dumfriesshire & Liddesdale; and runs 9 miles southward & southwestward to the Esk immediately opposite Irvine House 2 1/2 Miles below Langholm. Over 4 1/2 miles it traverses the interior of Ewes; and over the rest of its run it has Langholm on its right bank & part of Ewes & the whole of Canonbie on its left. The channel of the Tarras is very rugged and its banks are beautifully shaded & overhung with wood, it is also a favourite resort for Anglers; and is celebrated for its trout.
