062 | [Situation] Towards the Sn. [Southern] extremity of the Parish of Annan The Name is derived from that of the Parish in which the town is Situated. Annan is a royal burgh situate on the left bank of the River Annan near its discharge into the Solway Firth - distant 15½ miles East by South of the County Town of Dumfries. - It is One of the most Ancient towns in Scotland - having received its first Charter from King Robert Bruce. - The subsisting Charter however was granted by James VI in 1612. - There is a weekly market held in it; also two fairs in May And October. The Principal Street runs from West to East of the densely populated part of the town and is called High Street. - Several other wide Streets diverge North and South therefrom. - The houses in general two storeys high are neat And well built of Sandstone. - The River Annan passes the Town on the West [Continued on page 2] |
