James Rae Labourer - Stapleton |
063 |
[Situation] On the boundary between Annan and Dornock. --
A large stone about three feet long, two feet wide and about one foot thick, built into a bank a little to the west of Upper Woodhead. It is said to contain three holes and that to that circumstance it owes its name. There are no holes visible on the exposed side, the other side is completely built up, so I could not ascertain whether it contained any holes or not. ---
From the appearance and size of several stones built into the banks near the place, it is quite evident that they have been removed from the Druidical Temple said to have been on this spot.
"The Stone in which a wooden Cross formerly stood, also, still remains; it was called St Marjory's Cross, to whom traditions says the Church itself was dedicated". (the Parish Church) The Three Piked Stane is the Stone referred to in the above quotation. |

|
[Situation] Towards the S.En. [South Eastern] extremity of the County of Dumfries.
The name of this Parish is derived from that of the River Annan which runs in a Southern direction through the Wn. [Western] district. The derivation is doubtful, but is supposed to be Amhann the slow running water.
The Parish of Annan is bounded on the North by Hoddom and Middlebie on the East by Kilpartrick-Fleming and Dornock, on the South by the Solway Firth and on the West by Cummertrees and Hoddom. There is no detached part of it within the boundaries of another Parish nor is there within the limits above assigned to it a detached portion of any other Parish. Irregular in shape, it varies from 2½ miles to 4 miles in breadth and is 8 miles in length - and its entire area has now been computed [--] acres of which about ⁹/₁₀ths are arable and permanent pasture, the remainder being moor waste and plantation. The shores are flat and sandy - as also the whole district which has a gradual incline towards the South. - Three parallel ridges of moderate height run through the Parish in a N.E. [North East] and S.W. [South West] direction - at the termination of the latter of which is Woodcock Air the greatest elevation measuring [Continued on page 169] |

measuring 320 feet above sea level. The River Annan forming for the most part the Western Parish Boundary is the principal Stream - Kirtle Water on the N.En. [North Eastern] boundary is also a considerable Stream - many Streams from the interior contributing their waters thereto. Six lines of Turnpike Roads all converge at or near to the Town of Annan. The Glasgow and South-Western Railway passes from West to East through the Sn [Southern] division. There are minerals wrought; the manufacture of Tiles is Carried on to a considerable extent in the Sn [Southern] districts. - The Town and Burgh of Annan is situate in the Sn [Southern] district (See N.B.
