The southern district consists of a broad vale, along the base of the uplands, a narrower vale along the Southern border, and an intermediate ridgy swell; and has a well cultivated, pleasant, & warm appearance Between 800 & 900 acres are wooded, & about 11,000 are either regularly or occasionally under the Plough. The Streams which drain the parish are chiefly three, which run on the boundaries - one of them a head Stream of the Blackadder, & the other two confluent tributaries of the Leader.
The mansion of Spottiswoode, Situated on the West, & the seat of the principal landower is partly a new house, not long finished & built on the old English Style, with an encincturing and an Architecturally ornamented terrace, & partly the old family residence repaired, altered, & worked into proximate harmony of Character with the old edifice. Bassendean house in the South, & the Seat of Colonel Home is a neatly modernized plain old building, in the midst of tastefully embellished grounds.

Wedderlie, once a seat, but now a mere Shooting-box, belonging to Lord Blantyre, Stands at the base of the uplands, is an ancient structure crumbling into utter despair.
The Village of Westruther stands in the centre of the parish, 7 Miles East of Lauder, & about the same distance West North West of Greenlaw. Hounslaw stands 1¾ Mile to the South of Westruther. A third Village "Wedderlie" formerly existed but has now disappeared.
On "Twin Law", one of the Summits of the uplands, are two huge piles of Stones, conspicuous at a great distance, well known over the circumjacent country as the "Twinlaw Cairns", & said to be commerative generally of a great though unrecorded national fight for Scottish independence, & specially of twin brothers of the name of Edgar, who led their opposite hosts, and ignorant of their mutual relationship fought out a stiff Contest between their armies by a personal and Single Combat.

Of various Peel-houses or border fortalices which once bristled athwart the surface, the only Surviving one, even in ruin is at Evelaw, 1¼ Mile N. [North] East of Wedderlie. It was only of a comparatively modern date that Westruther became a separate & independent parish. It belonged anciently to the widely extended parish of Home. On a new parochial division of this district at the Reformation it became a part of the parish of Gordon, and, down to the year 1647, the inhabitants of this place, had no nearer place of worship than the church of Gordon. That church, however, being about 8 miles distant from the Most northerly part of Westruther & there being no communication but through almost impassable Moors, a disjunction was effected, & the people Supplied with religious ordinances at Bassendean, which was Selected from the double reason of there being an old Catholic chapel there, which, though it had been discontinued Since the Reformation, was still in good condition - & of its being the site of a thriving & populous Village. This, however, was only a temporary arrangement - For in two years after the Inhabitants of Wedderlie

Thornydyke, & Spottiswoode, at each of which places there were Hamlets of considerable extent, being still dissatisfied with the distance, the heritors agreed to make choice of a more central situation for a church, & accordingly, the Minister was removed from Bassendean to Westruther in 1649 - The chapel at Wedderlie is of great antiquity, as Several charters Still exist which were framed in the thirteenth century. It has long been in ruins, & nothing remains to mark the place where it stood, except a Vault belonging to it, into which, as tradition reports, the Monks at the Reformation conveyed their most valuable effects, till a Convenient opportunity occured for their removal. That at Spottiswoode was built by the Lord of the Manor during the reign of David II., for the benefit of his family & hamlet. It received the name of "Whitechapel", & long Stood in ruins, till these were entirely swept away when the ground was cleared for building the present offices at Spottiswoode.
The only relic of it that has been preserved is a baptismal font.

The chapel of Bassendean, the ruins of which Still exist, to the height of ten or twelve feet from the ground, was employed, for religious purposes & served by a Vicar, long before the Reformation - The interior of the chapel is still used as a burial place by the family.
There are Said to be the remains of a Roman Camp on the farm of Raecleugh, a little above Bruntaburn, & another in Harelaw Moor; but the Mounds are now so indistinct, & to have been So much injured by time & other causes, that it is impossible to judge with any accuracy, from their present appearance, whether or not they are to be considered as the Vestiges of a Roman encampment.
A place in the Wedderlie Moors called Gibbs Cross where tradition affirms that a person suffered martyrdom for his attachment to the Protestant faith.
There is no Tower in this parish with the exception of "Evelaw Tower" altho [although] there were several of them formerly.
There is no portion of any other Parish within Westruther. |

Mr Blackadder estimated this division to Contain 100.226 acres - the whole remainder of the County with the exception of 6.880 acres may be considered as forming part of the Lammermoor District & according to the same authority should contain 185.214 acres. |

The Lammermoors, are, in themselves, an extensive Curvature of, for the most part, wild, cheerless, unsightly heights, - nowhere bold & imposing in aspect, and after Subsiding into low rolling table-lands. of bleak Moor - They were at one time clothed with Forest, & must then have been as bewildering to the Traveller, as grandly Sylvan in their vast contribution to the landscape. They still have natural woods hanging on Some of their Steeps, and, in Such localities, are warmed out of their chilliness of aspect -; but over their Summits, & down their higher Slopes, they are
almost everywhere nakedly dressed in heath.
Lammer Law, with rises in the parish of Lauder and gives name to the whole range has an altitude of 1500 feet - Among other chief or remarkable Summits, according of Blackadder in his Survey of Berwickshire, Criblaw has an elevation of 1615 feet; Clinthill 1544; Tippet Knowes 1323; Manslaughter Law, 1273; Twinlaw Hill, 1260; Earlston Hill 1200; Great Dirrington Law, 1145; Ayrhousehill 1054; Bemersidehill, 1011; & Cockburnlaw 912 feet. |

Westruther Parish -- [Sheet] 14 -- by Charles Buck
[Note] -- "The Twin law Cairns are undoubtly of very great antiquity, having contained
in the heart, probably of both, undoubtedly Still one of them, a Kist-vaen,
a Stone or giant Chamber or Scarcophagus, the earlist Kind of Catacomb,
or place of Sepulture Known in the North of Europe, & used during what
has been Called the Stone period, before the use of implements either of
bronze or Iron was Known, - antecedent of Course [to the] time of the Romans -
These Kist-vaens are formed from 3 to 4 feet in height, depth, & breadth, of
flat Slabs of Stones for the bottom; Similar ones Set on edge for the 4 Sides, & Similar ones laid over the
top for a lid, the Corpse doubled up in it, not laid at length - The tradition is, that these Cairns were erected
as monuments over the bodies of two brothers, who were there buried, having been Killed in a great
engagement near that place. Two versions exist, one that the two brothers commanded a native
Army which overcame & repelled a body of invaders, but in which the brothers were slain - & there buried.
The other, that two brothers commanded separate bodies, fought a Sanguinary battle with each other, in which both
were Killed - Each Cairn Stands on a circular base of Stones, 60 feet in diameter, Sloping from the ground at the Circumference to 5 feet
in height, at the base of each Cairn. The Cairns Stand about 15 feet high above that base.
The Cairns Stand on the top of a high & conspicous hill - the Twinlaw Hill. Almost all the Stones (which are grawacke) are
water worn, not Quarried, - There are no loose Stones or boulders on the hill, & the tradition is, that the Stones were taken
out of the Watch Water at the North base of the hill, & carried to the top by a line of Soldiers placed from the bottom to the
top - & conveyed from hand to hand till they reached their ultimate destination." --
