022.05 | This building has been the Seat of the Earls of Marchmont, previous to the Erection of marchmonthouse, and stood about 300 yards to the east of this building. It was beautifully situated in the Southwest curve of the parish, of a formidable appearance being built in the Style of the old Scottish Strongholds and five Stories high, and was partly Surrounded by a moat of which some faint traces are still visible towards the north. The Exact time of its Erection is unKnown, however the present remains of the ornamental hewn work as well as the great number of very old trees in the vicinity leads to suppose that it has been built in the 14th or 15th Century. These remains having formed the two wings of the Castle are now used as dwelling houses for the Stewart, Gardener, and other people employed on the Estate. |
