018.02 The site of where once stood the Ancient Ph. [Parish] Church of Mordington, is now Scarcely visible, and with much difficulty Could be traced. According to the best account this church was burned down in 1756 or 1758, some say maliciously others by accident; from that period to 1817 the Grave yard & tombs were fast hastening to obstruction, till the generosity of the proprietor led him to erect a sunk wall around what was once the ancient burial vault of the Mordington family, but now used as a refuse house; it bears many illustrations of its antiquity, this may be learned upon reference to the History of Coldingham page 152.
About a dozen tombs lie scattered about the wood, but none remain without, the oldest bearing date 1609 and latest 1762.
