027.01 This is the ruin of a square fortalice having a moat round it, which originally was four stories high; it was unroofed about fifteen years ago by the tenant of Greenknowe farm & is now permitted to fall completely to decay. Above the entrance door, cut into stone are two Armorial Shields & the figures 1581 - the date of its erection. It is said to have been built by Alexander Seton Gordon who by marriage with the Gordon family became the proprietor of "Greenknowe," and from whom it descended likewise by marriage, into the family of Pringle; Subsequently it was purchased by an Ancestor of the present possessor - Fairholm, Esq Chapel.

027.01 A small one story House the Residence of the Parish School Master Mr Dodds. the keeping for which he receives a few pounds per year. The House is the property of the estab. [established] Church and the Post Office is only a mere nominal affair - from year to year.
