022.06 | An extensive farmhouse situated in the north west part of the parish, a short distance from the northern road leading to Greenlaw, the dwelling house and the greater part of the offices which are of recent Erection of which the latter possess every improvement in facilitating and accellerating the labour. The farm extends along the Howe Burn as far as Chatterdeanford and by well adapted drainage and the carefulness of the enterprising tenant Mr Cockburn is in an excellent condition. This farm was formerly divided, and consisted of three, named; Overhall, Netherhall & Sisterpath of which the old houses have partly been taken down, partly united with the offices of the present farm of which Richard Trotter of Mortonhall is the proprietor. The origin of the name is ascribed to a nunnery which is supposed to have stood in its neighbourhood and its inmates are said to have taken their solitary walks in the vicinity of the present farmhouse. It can scarcely be doubted such being the case as such Establishments are known to have existed in the neighbourhood, however no remains of such a building are found, neither can its site be ascertained. |
