The name of this parish was originally Ercildoun, which is still used by some the older inhabitants-
The origin of the name is uncertainbut the place itself appears to have early attracted attention & this might be sufficiently accounted for not only by its vicinity to the monasteries of Melrose & Dryburgh but likewise by its having been residence of Thomas the Rhymer who, in many respects, was one of the most extraordinary men of his age. The parish is in length from East to West upward of about 6 miles and about 4½ in breadth. It is bounded on the W [West] by Lauder & Melrose, on the south by Merton, on the east by Smailholme and Nenthorn and on the North by Gordon & Legerwood.
The parish contains no mountain ranges, though part of |

the country is hilly: nor are any of its hills remarkable save one almost a mile South of the village, which is thought to bear some impressions of having been the site of a Roman encampment, and rises nearly 1000 feet above the level of the sea.
There are two Rivers in the parish, the Eden & the Leader both of which have their Source in the Lammermoor & flow into the Tweed - And though neither of them be remarkable for breadth or depth or extent - Yet the Leader, on account of the beauty of its banks, has been justly celebrated in Scottish Song. Its windings between the hills of Carolside & through the classic grounds of Cowdenknowes till its waters at Drygrange are lost in the principal river of the South of Scotland form part of the scene of uncommon beauty |

Considerable varieties of soil appear in the parish of Earlston. The arable land is for the most part dry; it is of a loamy rather than a sandy nature and some of it is justly considered as strong and rich. A proportion of barren heath is here and there to be met with, and while in the eastern quarter there is a good deal of marshy ground there is a moss in the Northern division consisting of several hundreds of acres. The only remains of antiquity are, part of one of the walls of the Tower or Castle belonging to or of Sir Thomas the Rhymer, the pit, and Tower and trees of Cowdenknowes, a stone inserted in the wall of the church bearing the inscription " Auld Rhymers race lies in this place" and a stone taken from a grave, on which is a figure bearing a near resemblance to a Maltese Cross. Some years ago, near the western extremity of the Village, an ancient thorn tree, on which the fortunes of the place , according to the Superstitious Traditions of the older Inhabitants, were alleged to depend.
The venerable thorn above alluded to, at length yielded to the tempest, and near the spot where it had long flourished there now stands a handsome house lately erected. The principal mansion houses in the parish are "Mellerstain" the princely residence of G. Ballie Esq. - the house of Cowdenknowes, whose adjoining scenery has been made Classical by the beautiful melody of "The Broom o' the Cowdenknowes" and the house of Carolside, which, from the stillness of the Vale around it, and from the hills which .. |

It has hitherto been unable to afford accommodations to more than 450 persons of whom none with the exception of the heritors, have free sittings; but besides the repairs, it is now also receiving an enlargement, which will be Capable of holding nearly 1200.
The manse was erected in 1814 - and repaired in 1824 -
The stipend is 16 Chalders. The Glebe, which is between 7 & 8 acres in extent, is so valuable as to let for upwards of £5.0.0 per acre.

In ancient times, the shire of Berwick seems to have been a separate jurisdiction from the Bailliary of Lauderdale and to have been itself divided into the Merse and Lammermoor districts.
It is not easy to say what had been the exact boundaries and extent of these three divisions, now almost obsolete.
For the purposes of agricultural inquiry, the whole county may be very conveniently considered under two districts - the Merse and Lammermoor: the former including all the comparatively low land along Tweed, Whiteadder, Blackadder and Eye; & the latter Comprehending Lauderdale along with the more eastern hilly country peculiarly called " Lammermoor. The limits of Lauderdale so far as the usage of calling it a district, cannot be defined, & must probably be understood as including simply the Basin of the Leader & its tributaries. So far as the basin is in Berwickshire
