030.02 On the East bank of the Leader Water about a mile South from the Village of Earlston, is the Seat of R. Cotsworth Esqr. classically Celebrated by the Song & Air of the 'Broom of Cowdenknows'; the mansion is a capacious plain modern dwelling 3 Stories in height, adorned naturally by the beauty of its position & embellished by an ornamentally laid out demesne. On the East Side is a Square tower, with a long plain building one storey high of modern date & joined to it on the North Side; The tower is supposed to have originally Erected about the beginning of the 15th Century, and is 4 Stories high having a flat Summit, from which a Splendid View of the Surrounding Scenery can be had. It appears to have been rebuilt, or considerably repaired at various periods since, Externally it is in good preservation, & is partly used as offices. Near to the house on the South Side, is a dungeon, or pit, generally found appertaining to the Border fortalices; A flight
