026.14 ; 026.15 The principal village in the Parish of Earlston, Situated on the east bank of the River Leader. about 6 miles below Lauder. and 5 miles from Melrose. For the most part the houses are of recent erection, neat and Comfortable and occupied by Small retailers, mechanics, agriculturalists etc. There are two Manufactories adjoining the village. The principal one is a Manufactory of blankets, plaids and flannels, and the other of gingham, merinos, shawls, muslins etc etc. and affording the means of Subsistance to many of the villagers. There are 4 places of worship, a parish school, a public library and Reading Room: a post office and 3 inns. At the western end of the village may be seen the remains of the tower of Sir Thomas the Rhymer, the West and north sides of which are still standing.
