The southern portion is called (Detached) the northern portion is the parish proper - for which See Description. This Southern or detached Section has for its boundary line on the North & East by Longformacus, on the South by Westruther, on the West by Lauder & Longformacus; & is of an oblong form, measuring 41/2 Miles in extreme length, & 21/4 in extreme breadth. OS1/5/14/3 LAMMERMOOR (District) Lammermoor (District) Fullerton's Gazetteer New Statistical account of Berwickshire Chalmers Caledonia 008; 009; 015; 016 In ancient times the shire of Berwick seems to have been a separate jurisdiction from the Bailliary of Lauderdale, & to have been divided into the Merse and Lammermoor Districts. It is not easy to say what had been the exact boundaries and extent of these 3 divisions, now almost obsolete. For the purposes of agricultural inquiry the whole county may be very conveniently considered under two districts the Merse & Lammermoor; the former including all the comparatively low land along Tweed, Whiteadder, Blackadder, and Eye; & the latter comprehending Lauderdale, along with the more eastern hilly country peculiarly Called Lammermoor. According to the general divisions of the County just pointed out, the Merse designates the lower ground from Tweed. up the cultivated slopes of the southern range of the Lammermoor hills, including the Western parishes of Nenthorn & Merton, and forming the largest piece of [continued on page 4]

Mr Blackadder estimates this division to contain 100.26 acres. The whole remainder of the County with the exception of the liberties of Berwick is therefore to be considered as forming the Lammermoor District & according to the same authority should contain 185.214 acres.

OS1/5/14/5 LAMMERMOOR HILLS Lammermoor Hills Map of Berwickshire Fullertons Gazetteer Scotland New Statistical account of Berwickshire 008 ; 009 ; 015 ; 016 A broad range of Moorish heights, Stretching Eastward from the Vale of Gala Water, in the S.E [South East] extremity of Mid Lothian, to the German ocean at St. Abbs Head in the parish of Coldingham Berwickshire. The Lammermoors all lie within East Lothian, & Berwickshire, Commencing at their extreme Western limit, forming for two thirds of their extent a Southern Screen or belt of uplands to Mid Lothian; and Constituting - if the Lammermoor part of Lauderdale be included - nearly one half of Berwickshire. The Lammermoors, are, in themselves, an extensive Curvature of, for the most part, wild, cheerless, unsightly heights, nowhere bold and imposing in aspect, and often subsiding into low rolling Table-lands of bleak moor. OS1/5/14/6 LAMMERMOOR HILLS Lammermoor Hills Continued 008; 009; 105; 016 [continued from page 5] as bewidering to the Traveller as grandly sylvan in their vast Contribution to the Landscape They have Still natural slopes hanging on some of their slope and in such localities are warmed out of their chilliness of aspect; but over their summits, and down their higher Slopes, they are almost everywhere, nakedly dressed in heath. Lammer Law. in the Parish of Lauder gives name to the whole range, & has an altitude of 1500 feet. Among other chief or remarkable summits, according to the measurements of Blackadder in his survey of Berwickshire, Criblaw has an altitude of 1615 feet, Clint Hill 1544, Tippet Law 1323, Mainslaughter Law 1273, Twin Law 1260, Earlston Hill 1200, Great Dirrington Hill 1145, Ayrhouse Hill 1054, Bemerside Hill 1011, and Cockburn Law. 912 feet.

OS1/5/14/31 DYE WATER Dye Water David Browne Esq Robert Neil Longformacus Inn John Neil Longformacus Inn 008 ; 009 A wide Shallow & rapid run of water, with a rocky bed; but it quickly swells into a fearful torrent when much rain falls. & Covers the whole Valley. It rises about 1 mile N.N [North North] East of Scenes Law, passes Byrescleugh Horseupcleugh, & Longformacus & joins the Whiteadder about a Mile West of Ellemford. It is considered to be a good fishing stream for Trout - & is Much frequented by Anglers.

OS1/5/14/33 DIRRINGTON BURN Dirrington Burn Mr Robert Niel Adam Scott William Lun 015 A considerable run of water which has its Source from the Surface drains near to "Eve Law", it takes an easterly Course & joins Flasswells Burn, a little west of Kippetlaw - these two streams when united become Kippetlaw Burn. which flows round the west & North base of Dirrington Great Law as far as Blacksmill farm. from this point it becomes Blacksmill Burn to where it empties itself into the Dye a short distance East of Longformacus Village.
